My neighbor came to me one day about a month and a half back and told me her friend in the next flat ( next building) has bought a dog and since I have 2 dogs wanted some tips on bringing up a pet. So she took me to her friend’s house. This is a small family husband, wife and they have a son who is in the second standard. I went there and here was this little Labrador pup. Pure black in colour.

He was locked up in a cage. When I saw him I felt so sad. I opened the cage door and he came running out. He went running to the lady and when he went close she just screamed and climbed on the chair. Her son did the same. It is just that she has never been in close quarters with any animal. This is her first experience with an animal and she is too scared of him. The man was OK with the pup.

Then I told them you need to love the little fellow as your own child. He is so small and thrives on love that you give him. He bites playfully and it will not harm. I also told them not to lock him up (most of the day and night he is locked up in the cage) and let him play around the house. But they have restrictions like he should not enter their bedrooms and should remain only in the living room. When guests come he is locked in the toilet. While I was there he was so playful and running most of the time. They wanted a trainer and I told them not to get anyone as we are the best trainers for our dogs.

Then I met her a few days later and she said the pup never sleeps during the night. I told her it is natural as they are nocturnal. They do not have proper times like humans. But she said she is very disturbed by it. She said she had taken the pup to the vet, got his injections and also taken him for grooming.

After a few more days I visited her just to see how Charlie was getting along. Then she told me they want to give him away as her son has developed an allergy. But they are not yet sure whether to do it. I told her if they want to give him away then to do so fast as he is also growing up. But still I found that they are confining him to the cage.

Now a couple of days back another of my neighbor who also loves dogs told me she saw that man, he had tied Charlie in the terrace and was beating him. I was so angry and we called him and said there is a buyer who is ready. He said he had bought this for Rs. 7500/-, purchased a cage and eating bowls. Had bought him bones too and fed him for a month, so if this person is reasonable then he would sell Charlie.

FYI I have not personally seen him harming the pup. If I do so then I will just carry away the pup and give him to CUPA and this man can do what he wants. .

But after this , I did call him and give him a piece of my mind and told him to part with the pup before it is too late. I explained how difficult it is going to get as he grows up. He will bark for any small sound and it will be disturbing. You can tolerate this only if you love the poor fellow. Otherwise you will feel like beating him. He said “No No No we never beat him”

I am so angry that they can treat a poor little helpless thing like that. Why buy something and hurt it. Why be impulsive. Whose life is it anyway?.

I can understand your frustration and also feel very sad/angry. Having grown with a dog in our home and still have a pet dog now, I know that a dog has every emotion/feeling a human being has. He is a creature who can give unconditional love to us.

I've seen lot of people buying a dog in an impulse and later giving it away. It is a emotional truama for the dog too.

To everyone who wants to have a dog in your home, please know that having a dog is like having a child. It is lot of work and it needs lots of love. Please get a puppy only if you can dedicate time and give love to him.

    Hi Uma,
Your whole narration was truly a tear jerker. There are hundreds of folks especially the wealthy too who just buy the most expensive breeds to keep up with their competetive peers .They lock the poor souls in cages and rarely have time or inclination to spend with them leave alone pat them Most often these poor doggies are left to the mercy of the servants who will beat them up and torture them as their fanciful moods dictate. It is heartbreaking to see such treatment surely, but what can those of us who feel otherwise do about it? it is a hopeless situation..We can only lament....

    Dear All,

    Thank you for your responses.

I called the owner a couple of days back to find out how the pup is. He has given him away.

    I was so happy.

    Regards
    Uma

    Dear Sindmani,

Many people do this not knowing what they are getting into. I have come across so many of them. They never know a dog is for life and is a baby in the family.

This family moved to Australia and found a home for Charlie. Hope he is happy there

A large breed like a Lab' in a flat is a bad sign. Happy that s/he emigrated to a large continent to run about and play.
