    Chats and snaps etc have been used to prove bullying and harassment and kids have gotten in trouble because of it.

    I thought I was in the minority. Everyone on FB says that ought to teach them a lesson. Well, there is the POTUS, tweeting left right and center and there are kids losing Harvard admissions over memes. They could have made it a conditional admission and observed to see if the kids repented at all.

    A must to have at least 2-3 years of interneship experience during their BS/MS program. It will help to find their first job or make a decision about going to Phd program or taking exam to enter into the medical field. "Networking" -- students will know the value of it!

    Few advisors take their 'key' students to the conferences along with them and also give an opportunity to provide poster presentation. It is not necessarily the higher GPA but for a student with the vision - creative ideas. It gives a boost/excellent opportunity to get funding for their schools, and exposure to the lead industry experts.

    Does all these necessary? No, it varies with each student. If the student is bright/stood out in the crowd, the college will spot / recruit them.

    Like soka mentioned earlier, the second mentor is the key person in the student's life. Often Lead/Guide them into the opportunity. A nerdy type with thick glasses.....eventually will enter into Phd the program!

    I believe Harvard gave the kids a chance - sought explanation before withdrawing admissions.

    Once enrolled and attending college, it is not so easy for the college to chuck them out. Even now, if they have paid a deposit, and are technically enrolled, the admission cannot be rescinded for such acts in some states like CA, it seems. Leonard Law - Wikipedia

    BTW, the school's accelerated program is carried into the college - BS program. Students with advanced math/language school credits help them to skip/bypass their 1st year college classes. It leads them into to take '2nd' year classes and so on... it gives a boast (lift) in their college credits, instead of taking basic credits/requirements to get their BS credits, some bright students will get into advanced classes/have a chance to work with their masters/Phd students in their research lab.

    Is it written anywhere? I really don't know....you will know by talking with someone like @sokanasanah or from closer friend/relative in the universities.

    The guidance is the first step....after that it is up to the student to network/expand the horizon in their field.

    As they say, opportunities are endless in US, does everyone get the same attention? No, some by chance or by luck, bump into that "key" person's vision...gets that 'guru' parvai to get a boost in their career!

    I have been re-reading this thread many times and this one caught my attention "Math enrichment courses are available outside school and participating in after school math clubs etc. helps. some universities offer math enrichment courses online too. This gives a head start at middle school level if in Public School System".

    My son starts middle school this year. Can you please provide the list of math enrichment online courses targeted for middle schoolers?

    Summer is going by and no one is worrying or worrying others about high school : ) This won't do.. : )

    An update I saw on rediff or FB:
    Bengaluru student only Indian girl to get into MIT for UG this year
    Kaveri Nadhamuni, a 17-year-old student from Bengaluru, is the only girl from India to get admission into MIT (under grad). Very accomplished girl, and an impressive resume.

    Been reading about the H1 visa issue and Trump government's moves to curtail the number of visas issued and requirements to qualify for it. Against this backdrop, should students in India exercise caution before moving to the U.S. for undergrad or graduate studies?

    Hello All,

    I had to post this as a response to this thread since I do not have privileges to start a post yet. Request your responses.
    I would be moving to Atlanta on L1A in January with my younger daughter of 4.5 yrs. My spouse is there already. The elder daughter (grade 8, ICSE syllabus India) would join us in April after she completes her current academic year. Please throw some light on the high school prep procedure, I am totally ignorant of anything that I need to be aware of
    1. Would she have to take up admission tests to high school?
    2. Do we choose subjects/ areas we might wish to pursue (as followed in IG syllabus in India), and if so, how many?
    3. How do I begin getting her prepared?
    4. How do we seek admission to the public school, and what are the formalities involved; do we need to bring anything other than her report cards, certificates, Transfer certificate from India?
    5. Would she get a chance to appear for a test to pursue advanced curriculum?

    Kindly share any website/ links that may provide any info on these. Thank you so much.

    Yes. Usually there are seven classes in the 9th grade. There are mandatory classes that all kids have to take and then there are things a kid can choose to take. I think each state has a list of prerequisite courses that kids need to have before graduating HS - eg; 4 years of English, one sem of communication, sem of health, year of PE, fine arts, 3 yrs of social sciences, 4 years of science etc. Lots of courses fit within all these categories and the kids can make choices.

    I’m not sure she needs much prep work prior to meeting with HS counselor m. I’ve always felt the social aspect is important for girls. Look to see if you can find other kids in the same community who will go to the same HS.

    If you already have an address and utility bills in DH’s name, look at the HS your daughter will be attending for your zone online. Call or email the front desk and get in touch with a counselor. Mention that you are in this area and need to admit your kid to HS in the fall. They start ground work in April/May for incoming freshmen. They can assign a counselor to your DD and start the school district enrollment process.

    I think bringing her syllabus will help decide placement. Some school districts do test for advanced placement and some don’t. Look at your local district’s websites for information regarding advanced placement with international transfers. If you get in touch with the school and get a counselor’s contact then they probably can guide you through all this.

    Thanks for the tag @Laks09. Your post pretty much covers it all. I'll add few things as they come to mind.

    General question for this time of the year:
    In elementary and even middle school, we usually send gifts or gift cards to child's teacher. What about high school?
    - Do you give gifts to teachers in Dec or when the school year ends?
    - All teachers? Few teachers that child is close to?
    - Give in December or end of school year?

    Gift or gift card? Do you write a note also? Child gives it or you go give it?

    So far, I've not done it. Partially because I am lazy, do not know much about the high school teachers, and also I might need to bribe the child to agree to the idea! That becomes overall too expensive. : )

    I’ve done both gifts and cards.
    She writes the notes and gives it. It’s her gift to them.

    If she doesn’t want to then it’s her call. Mine wants to do it, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. It’s added work and I get to buy/sort etc because she’s busy.
