    I have no problem with genuine cases. However anyone can get a service animal tag and bring it on board, so how is one to know? And don't even get me started on the 'emotional support' pets.

    Good Lord! I didn't even know this was allowed, and required to be allowed by law! In restaurants and other public places, I can understand, but on planes!

    The Air Carrier Access Act link in the post says this to airlines/carriers: "(1) You must not deny transportation to a service animal on the basis that its carriage may offend or annoy carrier personnel or persons traveling on the aircraft."

    [ bold font by me ]
    I guess they forgot to consider that the service animal might cause an allergic reaction in other passengers, or that other passengers might genuinely be afraid of dogs to the point of terrified.

    It isn't just a tag. They are trained service dogs and need a mountain of documentation as proof. Reg emotional support pets, even they need training and documentation. There are only certain certified trainers who can do the training and certification. These dogs cost 10-15k USD. I do some work with young adults on the spectrum who have emotional control pets that do help them with their extreme anxiety. They don't bother others but will stay close to their charges.

    It is very easy to get spurious service tags for animals. There is little oversight and few people would challenge the veracity of someone claiming their dog is a service animal. Its even worse for the claims of emotional support animals. We see it happen on a daily basis here. There are entitled people going around spoiling it for those who genuinely need this service.

    Seems like security check applies only for people. Dogs are free to board without paperwork :)
    The ADA clearly defines service animals. It isn't illegal to ask for documented proof for service animals. I wonder why they don't check it.

    @MalStrom, exactly! I got started because of ESAs (Emotional Support Animals) and people misusing the law. All it takes is $99 and a few minutes online. :shakehead:

    @Rihana, ikr?!

    I don't have allergies or cynophobia but I'm not comfortable flying with animals in the cabin. It's hard to predict how an animal will react to being confined in an enclosed area with a bunch of strangers.

    @Laks09, every well-intentioned thing gets corrupted by unscrupulous folks. There are "doctors" who hand certification out like candy — for a price. Anyone can go online and get an ESA registration for a few bucks. It's way cheaper than paying for pet transportation.
