    @Iravati
    Today is my mother's 103rd Birthday. I am sorry that I did not become an IAS officer as she wished but as we grew older, she started feeling that my brother too should have opted for a Bank job like me. The change of her mind came about when my brother had to dance to the tunes of the Minsters! Bank job was real fun. Even after two decades of my retirement, I recall with pleasure the various episodes that I encountered during my service. At least as far as the Bank job goes, the 'Grass is greener' adage is a big fallacy. I am a peculiar man. While others dream about what they want to be, I love dreaming about my past. It's recall of a different kind.
    Would you believe me that I am still not a member of Facebook? I wish to show my future generation that it is possible to live without being a member of Facebook.

    People like you and I can’t last on FB for more than a week.

    These platforms thrive on short and rapid bursts of energy in the form of protein bars whereas our rambling is that gristle that we grind on till it is misshapen and unrecognisable. We might even be ousted from FB if we have such winding conversations to the annoyance of swift transit of other netizens.

    I need space and wilderness in a discussion. You know, I don’t like being cramped in a conversation, need space to talk of the thinks one can think in this fellowship of ramblers. FB is constricted!

    Dear Cheensaar,

    Don't know how you do it? Though you are surrounded by the walls of your cool room, you take me wandering to places , up the hill and down the valley, Abba concert and kindergarten!! Not to forget the time travel one does with you! Back to childhood and childhood of the grandkids.....
    Some magic! Some magic??

    As for the nursery rhymes, it was just the other day that hubby and I were wondering how shocking and macabre some rhymes are!! Humpty Dumpty cracks his head and Jack of Jill is no better. There are umpteen stories behind these rhymes but how do we explain to the IPad wielding kid as to how it all came about? He'd rather get busy with his game on the pad!!

    Learnt a long time ago to not cherish dreams for our kids! Enough if we can nurture their dreams even if it is only selling apples in the market!

    As for the electronic days we are living through, how can I complain? Thanks for my gadgets I get to read your ramblings! Thanks to it that I got to know you even....

    K, Kamla

    @Iravati
    I loved the lion pouring out his feelings in
    I do not understand the logic of FB addicts. My daughter showed me a post by a man criticizing his wife for infidelity! I am sure he was angling for some fun by playing the sympathy card.
    One week is quite on the high side for me.

    @Kamla
    My dear Kamla
    When I was in the Presidency College in the late '50s, a common form of greeting when being introduced to a new friend was to say 'How do you do'. A naughty classmate of mine would always to respond to it with 'The same way as you do!'. The Principal once caught him red handed and gave him a liberal bit of his mind. But nothing could stop this guy and I must say here that he was one of the most popular guys in the college. No. no. it's not me if that's what you are wondering.
    Coming to rhymes, our desi ones are really catchy and soul stirring. They impart such values that they will be the finest molder of character.
    What you say about children is very true. Whether it was our younger days or now, dreams are pretty personal. Why should we put a value on them? What do we know about the life that they may face some fifty years hence?

    Have you ever wondered why the most popular guys in the campus are those mischievous rogues rather than studious and dignified characters. The studdoos and dignoos are boring! A woman will lose her heart to a smart-cred talking and easy-going prankster in a flutter but she will whet an honourable man like a triple-filter lens because the Buddha type men don't appeal to a woman. These pranksters are not depraved knaves. They are adorable rascals! In college campus, these men are the heart throbs. I have not seen one egghead ever coveted for his literary flair.

    Hmm, you are not off the hook. In this instance, I shall take your word.

    @Iravati
    Sigh. Why nobody told me this some 55 years back? I need not have been carrying bulky books in my hands to impress the girls! But no regrets. These bulky books did give me impressive biceps!
    Sigh again. I wish I heard someone saying this before the same 55 years!

    Biceps and deltoids should not be neglected. A woman is as finicky and fuddled as a possum caught in a headlights. One day she says brains, the next day brawn, and the next week bar mitzwah. Never trust a woman, she may staring at your eyes but she is in fact counting your bpm and profiling you like an NSA agent. You never know what traits are favoured or dismissed in that deathly stare. Though book-carrying worms are not sought after in colleges, they are still in the "charm" waiting-list. If Moose Mason is grabbed, then Dilton Doiley is levelled up. Telling you, a woman is more mysterious and explosive than all the cosmic wonders put together.

    A truly tough view to respond!
    Years ago there was a discussion in my club about who was more romantic, men or women. The discussion went on till almost midnight. A few members were getting restive about having to explain to their wives the reason for the delay. One member quipped that if a wife was very romantic, she would understand and appreciate the reason for the delay. A sweating member replied that the wife's level of bonhomie and understanding started declining steeply beyond 10 p.m. At twelve midnight and beyond, she would be a reincarnation of Kali. Every one agreed and quickly dispersed thanking the member for presenting the case in such excellent perspective!

    There is no confusion in who is more romantic. A woman's romance is not only fickle but also weighted and self-limiting. She will try not to get carried away but at the same time not be too rigid to scare the man away. She has to be serenaded and sought to even consider a man's approach. She will play hard to get. She will show least interest in the man's advances but internally burn for him. A wrong hand, a wrong foot or even a hasty kiss on the wrong cheek will dissolve the courtship. She wants the man to woo her with a clockwork precision. First the roses, then the perfumed letters, then the prom-dancing musical toys, then some more rosy letters then some more Cyrano de Bergerac letters. In spite of that, she will decry that his romance falls short of attention.

    On the other hand, a man is easily pleased. Moreover, if he likes a woman, he says he likes her. A woman will find a million ways to insinuate to a man that she likes him but never admitting to it in open daylight that she likes him. Why do you think all the Romeos languish in the darkness of the bushes under the balcony. A woman ensures that he stays in the dark about her wiles while provoking him to ensnare her.

    A woman's romance is a sine curve that shows no stability. Her caprice and charm flicker. After 10 pm the romance steeply declines, but past mid night if the man still has not turned up, it will be obliterated and to appease such an incendiary strike, the man has to wallow in repentance and pander to her wrath with two days worth of roses, perfumed letters, musical toys, and I will leave it to your imagination to catch the drift of the cost of a woman's romance.

    There has never been a scale to demonstrate or proclaim a woman's romance as superior to that of a man's. A man's romance is a hands-down and clean win because he puts up with that ticking time-bomb called woman.
