    Hi All,

    Once we get our US citizenship, I am planning to bring my parents here on GC. I want to know if they live with us in USA in their old age, does medicare and medical cover everything for them(GC holder senior citizens who have not paid anything to IRA or Social Security ever), what can I expect my out of pocket expenses towards their health care?

    Regards,
    SSLK

    Most states have a 5-year waiting period for new senior greencard holders to enroll, but some states like California make exceptions. If the ACA is still around then you can buy insurance policies for them if Medicare/Medicaid is not an option. The rates will depend on the state you are in and the insurers who offer plans there. You might be able to find out more on the ACA website.

    Looks like they are covered from day one to medical/Medicare without a penny from out pocket (for senior LPRs) and apparently they provide 200$ monthly in foodstamps too. My colleague who has his mother recently with him here and went though the whole process told me.

    @MalStrom and @sslkgpaa
    Can you post some links - I hear lotsa different versions of these things. I am not sure where @sslkgpaa got the "they are covered from day one to medical/medicare info?" - but would appreciate if you folks can clarify or post some URL links...

    New Immigrants Medical Insurance Plans

    New immigrants (green card holders) to USA are NOT eligible for benefits like Medicare.
    Medicare Eligibility for New Immigrants who are Green Card Holders

    Can you read these and provide feedback if right/wrong?

    California has more relaxed rules from other states, so new and senior green card holders get more benefits there including health insurance. They have information on the California state government site.
    Most other states have a 5-year waiting time for new permanent residents to become eligible for services.I know that for my cousins' parents in other states they had to buy their own medical insurance when they first came and that was very expensive. This was in the days before the ACA.

    I brought my mom on GC. She is not eligible for Medicaid.
    We got her insurance through the Marketplace - Obamacare.
    We pay close to a $1,000 every month towards her insurance.
    I do not live in California.

    Hi Ragini
    Yes. Her pre existing conditions are covered and she continues to receive treatment.
