    Dear Rajeni,

I used to be a regular in Stories Section years back (not as an author but as a commentator). Due to change of circumstances and life-style (I used to be single then, now I'm a mom to a naughty toddler) I had to abstain myself from coming to IL.

Its by chance that I came to Stories Section yesterday. I noted that there's a huge change here, especially with new authors coming up with exciting stories. Its by that same chance as well that I came across your story. I must admit- your story is amazingly intriguing and addictive. Everything about your writing is too wonderful to say in words. They way you molded the lead characters, give life to them and making us feel that they are a part of us. The manner in which you create the mystery around the characters, carefully giving out clues and yet keep us to the edge of our seats...everything is superb to say the least.

Like others here, I can't wait to read the rest of your story, in particular, I can't wait to see what you have in store for us. Amidst the busy lifestyle I currently have, your writing came as a fresh breath of air to me. Totally hooked to this now. Keep writing this wonderful piece! Waiting to read the rest in bated breath!

    Hi Sofia,

It is nice to here from you. So, you have a toddler to handle! No wonder you are not seen here in story forum or Koliwood Kisukisu. :) Best regards.

Rajeni, Sofea is a great attorney, if your story is built around law. :)

    Part 26:

“Looks like, someone is enquiring about you bro!” Arundati’s words rang in his ears and his mind replayed the conversation that took place the previous night.

“What?! Enquiring what?” Abhinay asked confused but before Arudati could answer, he understood what that meant.

    “Who?” he asked.

“Not sure.. We got to know from Arundati’s friend, they have enquired her saying that they got your details from some matchmaking site” Mithun explained.

“But, I am not in any site!” Abhinay said.

“Yes, I know. Not sure who is interested. May be Nethra?” Mithun asked doubtful.

    “I don’t think so”

“Why? There is nothing wrong, if she chose to enquire about you before committing to anything”

“Of course not! But, I don’t think she has thought that far. Whole last week, she was busy avoiding me..” Abhinay said thoughtful.

“Even I don’t think it’s Nethra. She simply didn’t look like someone who would enquire and then fall in love… ” Arundati said agreeing to Abhinay. “By now, either she would have fallen for you or she would have decided against it!” she added and Abhinay glared at her for the latter part and asked,

    “Is this the girl-knows-a-girl-better thing?”

“No! This is Arundati-knows-better thing” She returned.

Abhinay rolled his eyes and after a few seconds of thinking, he said, “I think I know who is behind this”

“Nethra’s parents still would be in dark even about my existence. So, that leaves only Arjun” Abhinay continued.

“Arjun? Nethra’s friend? Oh, that caring?!” Arundati asked surprised.

“May be! May no be!” Mithun said sarcastically and seeing his wife glare at him, he continued, “Two possiblilites Aru.. He might have enquired either as a friend, who doesn’t want Nethra to end up in bad hands or as a rival, looking for something to put Abhi in bad light!”

Abhinay just nodded, agreeing to Mithun’s inference.

“Either way, why you both are worried about that? What is there bad about Abhi that he will get to know” Arundati who doesn’t know anything about Abhinay’s past relationship, asked.

Abhinay and Mithun exchanged shocked glances.

“Of course, nothing, but if he enquiring for the latter reason, then he can very well make a mountain out of a mole. That’s what is concerning” Mithun managed.

“Hmm.. if Nethra is strong, this wouldn’t matter. But, if she has not decided anything yet, he might succeed in influencing her” Arundati said thoughtful and asked Abhinay, “What are you going to do, Anna?”

    “I have to think Aru”

Abhinay rose to leave and Mithun followed to see him off.

When they were alone outside, Abhinay asked, “How bad?”

    “He knows”

“Oh!” Abhinay had guessed this from Mithun’s face.

“They have also talked to Sushma, your college-mate. She told them everything and also told about that to her husband. He happens to be my distant relative. I got to know from him” Mithun said.

“Oh my! Of the all my college-mates why should it be Sushma! She is one of Anita’s friends. I bet he would also know about Anita working for us now” Abhinay said.

    “Uff.. Am sorry da”

    “Forget it Maabi! Lets see!”

Abhinay came out of his thoughts and paced in his room planning his next move. He checked the time. It was 6.30 in the morning. Deciding, he came out looking for Samyuktha.

“Maa, I have an urgent work, I have to meet someone in Chennai” he said.

    “Chennai?” She asked surprised.

“Yes Maa, we are planning for a project there. I have to meet that new client. Just saw the mail..” he lied coherently. “I will be back tonight or worst case tomorrow morning.. ok?” he added.

“Ok ok.. Have breakfast and start.. I will prepare”, Samyuktha said and rushed into the kitchen.

Abhinay hit the accerelator further as he crossed Electronic city and touched the Hosur by-pass road. The road was free as it was a Sunday morning and did not demand much of his attention. As he sped forward, his mind raced eight years back and took him back to Delhi. The day, which shook the foundation of his love, unfolded in his memory.

Abhinay reached Delhi returning from Bangalore. He had just lost his father. A month before that Abhinay travelled to Bangalore hearing about his father’s health. Prithviraj was suffering from brain tumour. It turned out that the severe headaches he had were not just migraine. By the time they realized that, it was too late. Though the disease had reached an advanced stage and the doctors had warned that the chance to succeed is very minimal, Abhinay insisted that they should try performing a surgery. The days before and during the surgery were traumatic for the entire family, witnessing the father suffer. Post-surgery a couple of weeks were hopeful when Prithviraj recovered slowly but the death blow struck with Inter-cerebral hemorrhage. None of the treatments could save him after that. Abhinay with Mithun’s help managed everything. Samyuktha, for whom her husband was someone who was with her from the beginning of her life, was devastated and depressed. Arundati, obviously a daddy’s girl, was also very deeply affected, she was found in tears almost all the time; she screamed at the middle of the night dreaming of the fateful day. Both the women, in the absence of the father, looked up to Abhinay for every little thing and he became their pillar of support. Prithviraj’s treatment consumed all their savings and the next shock came from Prithviraj’s business partner. He claimed the entire business citing various losses caused by Prithviraj. Though they knew most of them were cooked up, they did have the means to fight. The entire staff was on his side. By the time, he reached back Delhi after a month, he was tired and emotionally drained.

Anita knew that Abhinay’s father was sick and he had to go home to take care of him. She didn’t know about his demise. As their final exams were nearing, Abhinay thought not to disturb her. As he returned back, his tired self was too eager to meet his love, to draw strength from her love, to be pampered by her attention.

On hearing from him, Anita literally came running to meet him. They met in their usual coffee shop.

“You have lost weight Abhi.. Just in one month..” Anita said concerned, touching his jaw line.

“Lot of things happened..” he said blankly.

“Oh! What happened? How is Dad?” she asked.

Abhinay looked at her, tears filming his eyes, told, “Appa is no more Ani”

“What?? Oh my… Why didn’t you tell me.. I would have come.. I must.. What have you done Abhi” she said shocked by the news.

“That’s ok.. its exam time..” he said

“To hell with exams..” she said and turning to him, she held his hands in hers and said, “I am so sorry baby.. I am really sorry you have to go through this.. You should have told me.. I would have stayed by your side..” she said again.

He did not respond, but took her hands that held his and rested his face on her palms.

His mobile rang diverting his attention. It was Mithun.

“Tell me da…………………… Oh!................... What? No no not less than 50 Lakhs………………………….. Yeah, you talk to them……………………. Hmm, I will also check with the other one…………………………….. OK da.. bye”, he ended the conversation and his face fell again.

“What happened Abhi? What 50 lakhs?” Anita asked.

“We are selling the house. I said we cant afford less than 50 lakhs…” Abhinay said

“What? Why are you selling the house?!” She exclaimed.

Abhinay explained her everything – the cost of his father’s treatment and how his father’s business partner cheated them.

“Oh!” she was too shocked to react.

“Don’t worry! I am placed anyway and I am sure to rebuild everything lost, but now we can’t pay the mortgage interest and also we have to pay for Arundati’s education. So, have to sell the house” Abhinay went on seeing the concern in her face.

“But, Abhi.. how can that guy cheat like that? Can’t we sue him?” she asked

“No Ani… Dad trusted him too much and he had not maintained everything in black and white.. we don’t have enough proof” he said

    “That’s stupid!” she commented

“What?” Abhinay shocked by her comment looked at her. Her face was serious and thoughtful.

He asked again, “What did you just say?” this time between clenched tooth.

“I.. I mean.. leave it.. was just shocked” she managed.

“Anita, remember you are talking about my father and also an elderly person, who is no more now!” he said in a controlled voice.

“Sorry! Didn’t mean it” she apologized and after a few seconds said “I am getting late.. shall we leave?”

The next fifteen days went in exams and the communication between Abhinay and Anita was minimal on that pretext but Abhinay was not innocent enough to not notice the distance that was developing between them. He wondered what was wrong with her. Though he wanted to talk to her and find out what the problem was, he was also hurt that she was doing this when he needed her the most. So, he waited for her to come back.

Post exams he took a short trip to home and returned to Delhi in another two weeks. He moved in with a friend as he was placed in Gurgaon and had to start work in another week. It was the weekend after he returned and Abhinay called Anita in the morning and they spoke for a while. Though everything seemed normal on the surface, Abhinay sensed something not right. He dropped the idea of asking her out and stayed indoors. In the evening he got a call from his roommate. Furious on hearing the information he conveyed, Abhinay started from home and hurried to face the vicious turn of events.
