If it has to be one...it will be Exodus by Leon Uris. I was in high school we had to read and review a book during winter break. I was looking through appas collection. He is a voracious reader. He saw me struggling to choose one..and said ..here try this. Never knew anyone jewish or to be honest had any clue about history of Israel. Looked at that 700 page book and wondered...how am I going to get through this?
I couldn't have been more wrong...the book gripped me like no other. It was powerful ,inspiring and thought-provoking. I think I also fell in love with Ari that winter..pretty sure it lasted until summer :)
Lovely thread...brought back so many memories.

mad hatter origins.. somehow when I first picked this book I was not that interested..can never forget the line "I am the 50-50 of the species" something that left me wondering for long because I was caste, creed and religion unconscious until I was brutally woken up by the time I was in college.. sigh.
Thanks for reminding this one @Nonya

Now this is one book close to my heart. The objectivism of Ayn rand took me by its horn kept me riding high for long. In fact the first fight or serious argument between my then colleague/now husband happened because of Howard Roark.. magic of books and their power. Memory lane and discussion repeats... thank you @coffeecups

If Indian people are going to be impressed/influenced/amazed by ingliss book writing, how come they don't want to take an Indian with them into oblivion with just one book ? And why not an Indian Language Author's book in one of the India's languages ?

Vikram Seth is a good writer. Not confusing for the ordinary riff-raff, like Salman Rushdie.
Vikram S. wrote a whole novel in sonnets, called "The Golden Gate" when he was bored being a Ph.D. student in Economics. And each sonnet (poem of 14 lines) is perfect in syllable count, cadence, and rhyme. Not only is this an amazing technical feat in language, it is also an amazingly funny, good and heart-warming story. Google and read a few reviews. Everyone had raved.
