Of all the seasons, autumn is my favorite.
The chill in the air....the thin veil of mist....the mellow sunshine....the ripe fields....the arrival of migratory birds....the extra sweetness it adds to bird calls....even the regular afternoon chatter of the crows becomes special with the magical touch of the season....
The festivities....the bliss of sipping steaming hot ginger tea....the arrival of winter produce beautifully stacked in veggie market....the long evenings giving me extra time to read, curled up in a cozy bed.......
I wait all year long for this time of serenity, peace and bliss...
Last afternoon, we had been on a short trip to a village to meet and comfort and ailing someone....and the car journey....surreal I would say....with ripe paddy fields and tiny patches of woods on both sides...
The sight of the paddy fields took me to my childhood vacations in our native village and the busy acitivity filled days in the household surrounded by quiet and peaceful nature...the birds...the squirrels...the cows... farmhands...the temple.....and my grandparents...especially my grandmothers....yes....I had 3 grandmas....My dad's periamma.....about her I had written here: http://indusladies.com/community/threads/grandmas-secret.198360/.....my dad's ma and and maternal grandma...
My dad's periamma and maternal grandma....both lived in cities....were very enthusiastic crafters and were fashionable....( they were ardent fans of M.S amma and followed her hairstyle, saree draping style etc...). They were both great event managers....any function in any of our relative's place, they would be the first....listing out what to purchase...and where to purchase....and the cook's list, the vadhyaar's items..sarees.....accessories....glass bangles from a specific shop in Madras....return gifts and thamboolam bags.....everything would be in place....the stage decorated...the bride and groom/ seemantham mother to be / ayush homam child/ shashtyaptha poorthy couple would be on stage on time all decked....and the duo would flaunt their crochet edged blouses and brooched sarees....Both of them left....leaving behind lots and lots of memories.....My peria patty ( dad's periamma)'s witty talks...her helping tendency....her vendhaya sambar and urlakizhangu kari are fondly remembered and missed....My maternal grandma's organizing capacity...her beautiful, elaborate kolams, crocheting and bead works intrigue me even now....
My paternal grandma....she was in the native...managing the big household efficiently....making dabbas and dabbas of milk halwa and pooshnika halwa....pickles and vadaams....telling us bedtime stories when we visit them during our vacations....But, all her life she's been only there and never travelled alone...not very trendy....would talk to grandpa in a meek voice, with her saree pallu wrapped on the other shoulder...
I was pondering on the contrast....two of them going places....outspoken....enthusiastic...creating their own identity...their style....their PR skillls....and the other....calm and quiet....anchored to the ancestral home....sticking to the values she's been taught as a child....( her father who was a sanskrit pandit would wake her up at 4 every morning and would ask her to chant slokas an stotras...which she still remembers...)....
The car stopped and we met the ailing lady and her family and comforted them....
After a while we left and it was evening....
Autumn evening.......that too full moon evening....in a car....amidst paddy fields....I was so happy and didn't even feel the bumpy ride.....
Looking out through the window...I started to relish the feast to my senses.....the twilight.....the mist slowly coming down.....and........A huuuuge moon.....rising from the horizon.....A hue of deep orange....shining coool and making me send a prayer of thanks to Almighty....
Then the moon slowly rose above....becoming lighter and lighter.....until it became shiny, silver moon.....then paddy fields gleamed....the thick stretches of woods looked eerie....reminding me of Kenneth Anderson's and Jim Corbett's memoirs...
Then we passed a small stream....flowing with a rhythm...along the muddy road...and I noticed the moon's reflection....like streaks of silver being strewn and sieved....It crossed our path and then again the paddy fields....now blanketed with mist and well lit by the moon above....I was having a field day....
Later ...a tiny pond.....you know, in rural Assam , almost all households have a pond.....and yo behold...the moon......a perfect circle....like the face of a beautiful maiden who's checking her make up in a hand held mirror......amazing to watch....undisturbed....whole and serene.....beautiful indeed....
Then something occured to me....the beauty of my active, going places duo grandmas and the quiet , anchored to ancestral home grandma....both different...yet both equally special.....just like the reflection of the autumn moon....on a gushing stream or a quiet pond.....
Mmm....I sighed...sent my loving regards to my going places grandmas who are in heaven and decided to call my paternal grandma when I reached home....enjoying the autumn moon and reflections....coming along with me.....bringing beautiful memories and dreams....and thanking Almighty for yet another beautiful, blessed full-moon...

    Bhargavi @knbg,
This is a 'straight from heart' Snippet, which brims with your love and affection for the grandmas in your life. Connecting your feelings with the moon and its reflection is so beautiful. I always enjoy the breeze in your words, that is so gentle and soothing.
    Best wishes,

    Dear @knbg (Bhargavi),

Welcome back! I was wondering on your silence and missing you!

What a lucky one to have not one but three loving lovely grandmas! A beautiful narration of them along with the painting of rural Assam!

    Enjoyed! Beautiful write up!
