And indeed, WE know the first generations of you who had passed away, and indeed, WE know the present generations of you, and also those who will come afterwards.

Today's Verse :

when your Lord took out the offspring from the loins of the Children of Adam and made them bear witness about themselves, HE said, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ and they replied, ‘Yes,we bear witness.’ So you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘We were not aware of this;'

Or lest you should say: "It was our forefathers who, before us;
ascribed partners to God, and we are only the descendants who came after them: will you destroy us because of falsehoods they invented?’

In this way WE explain the messages, so that they may turn [to the truth]

Hi, can you explain a little bit more, what this means? Does it mean that when we were born, God asked us if he was our lord, we said yes... so we can't deny it when we die.

Or alternatively, we should say that it was our ancestors who believed in other Gods, and you should not punish us for that.

Is this correct?

Greetings!

Thank you for asking.
This Aayah or Verse of the Glorious Quran is related to a very important event.This is going to be a long explanation; sorry about that.

When Aadam was created (If you wish,you can read the story in detail here http://www.indusladies.com/forums/r...al-people/164291-stories-of-the-prophets.html

After the episode of angels prostrating to Aadam and Satan was accursed.

Aadam (peace be upon Him) was instructed to approach a group of Angels sitting near to him and greet them with the words Assalamu alaikum which means peace be upon you; they replied saying: "Peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah."

Allah said: "O Adam! This is your greeting and that of your offspring”.

At that point Aadam (peace be upon Him) had no idea what Allah was talking about with regards to offspring.

Then Allah extracted from Aadam (peace be upon Him)all of his descendants. From the very first of them to the last of them until the hour will be established. Now Aadam is seeing generation after generation of his children in front of him.

Aadam (peace be upon Him) was astonished to see all of them and he asked ,”Oh my Lord! What are they’…not even proper ‘who are they’, because he was really shocked to see all the people together that would ever walk on the face of the earth standing in front of him. Allah responded, ”They are your children”.

Here one thing is important to note that we all were there but in soul form. Souls were created much before the bodies. Soul is joined with our bodies only when we are in the womb of our Mothers.so we all witnessed that conversation between Aadam and our Lord.

Then Allah turned towards us and asked us, ‘Am I not your Lord’ and we all testified by saying, ’Yes, we bear witness’.
Every human being beard witness to the oneness of the Almighty Lord. But being human, once we are born into this world; we no longer remember that testimony in our conscious minds and THE ONE who created us is aware of this very well.

So HE, in HIS infinite mercy would not punish those who went back on that covenant unless the proof is established against them in this world through HIS messengers and HIS messages that they rejected.

Allah says in the Nobel Quran;

'And WE never punish until WE have sent a Messenger' 17:15

Allah says in the Quran;

O Children of Aadam! If there come to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you, MY Verses, then whosoever becomes pious and righteous, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. 7:35

So the Aayah:

when your Lord took out the offspring from the loins of the Children of Adam and made them bear witness about themselves, HE said, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ and they replied, ‘Yes, we bear witness.’ So you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘We were not aware of this; 7:172

O mankind! Worship your Lord, Who created you and those who were before you so that you may be mindful of HIM.

Who spread out the earth for you and built the sky; Who sent water down from it and with that water produced things for your sustenance.

Do not, knowing this, set up rivals to God. 2:21-22

Ms yamuna,

Seeing your versus, I remember reading the true incident.

It was during the muslim invasion era, temples were looted, temples where pulled down mosques were constructed, women molested and converted, men forced into saudi islam.
One such raids by a muslim ruler took place in Srirangam, Sri renganatha swamy temple,

The muslims took away the deity from the temple to delhi.
Many many decades had passed, Now the muslim ruler had a small daughter, he gave the idol to the daughter, she grew up attached to the idol. After years, Indians went to the muslim ruler and requested the idol to be returned back. Now the muslims are taught as per saudi tradition which says that indians were practice evil since, they believe in idol worship, so what use is that metal idol going to be for them? Keeping an evil will only bring ill luck? As it was not made of gold or silver, just metal. So no monetary value.
Having this thought in the mind, the muslim ruler returned back the idol to the temple priests.

Now there was a small issue, the muslim ruler's daughter who had grown up as a young maid, was much attached to the idol, while she was sleeping, the king took it away from her.

The temple priests returned back with the idol to srirangam, Now after the looting of the temple by the muslims, a new idol was placed and thus forgotton during the course of the time. When this idol was brought back, people questioned the authenticity as well as its origin.
Now Only one person could solve this problem. He was the washerman, Now see the grace of the god, The saviour maha vishnu had kept the washerman alive, he was in his late 80's, He had done the clothes washing for the temple's deity before the muslims raided. Initially he was tested with various ways to ascertain if he is indeed fit to verify the real idol.
atlast, he was given the original two sets of clothes, and he promptly identified that the idol looted by the muslim ruler was the original one.
And thus it was restored in the temple.

Now coming back to the muslim ruler's daughter, when she woke up she could not find the idol, and could not reconsile the fact that she will have to live without the idol. For a child who was taught with saudi customs and traditions, she did not know that it was the GOD himself who was in her custody. Unable to bear the seperation, she went along with the temple priests from delhi to sri rangam. After she arrived at srirangam she was in tatters, her clothes were torn, she did not resemble as a muslim ruler's daughter, she stayed under the tree, and was merciful with the alms which the passerby gave. All along she did not know that she was thinking of the god only. For her it was a doll, which she could not seperate from. She was completely lost in the thoughts of Lord Vishnu. She being a muslim, did not know the lords nama ucharanam, she being a muslim never a day visited a temple, but her thoughts and her body everything was lost to the god in the form of a doll, whom she did not know that he was the supreme power. Days passed, for a ruler's daughter from being brought up in gold and silver, she lived on he merciful at the passerby, who fed her. Nobody recognized her that she was a ruler's daughter. Now the muslim ruler finding his daughter missing, started searching for her, He came to sri rangam, finding his daughter in tatters, he wept and asked her to come back. But she replied, now her heart and mind and body is fully drenched in the thought of sri renganathar. I will not leave this place. A big cowd and arrived around her, the muslim ruler tried all sort of pacification, but could not convince his daughter to return back. He was full of tears.

The whole of the sri rangam was awe struck at the resilence of a muslim daughter, who was dead hunger, but could not bulge at the thought of leaving sri renganathar, All of a sudden a big light emerged, THe lord renganathar embraced her, The entire people were dumstruck.

Just see this simple calculations, the priests were doing poojas for generations, indians were donating gold silver and what not, But no the god was not merciful, he did not oblige his darshan. But Here a muslim ruler who invaded the god, looted the temple, his entire generations would have been finished, instead god embraced his daughter. It was only pure devotion. Everything else becomes zero.

Indeed as per your saying God,the Beneficent,the Merciful. It is true. Lord vishnu does bless his true devotees, the lord does not see religion, caste or creed, only the inner atma which is as pure as the light.
