Hi Friends, I know this is very popular question for the folks moving out of country first time. We might be moving to Atlanta on H1B job for my Husband and would like to know below details. 1. cost of living for couple with 3 yrs kid, rental and better places to stay. 2. South Indian communities (specially telugu) 3. Weather in Atlanta 4. Personal tax in Atlanta 5. Pre schooling cost in Atlanta 6. Public Transportation, Rentals and safety in Atlanta. It would be great if some one help me on this questions. Thanks, SST
Hi Tjsreenath, Welcome to Atlanta. its a nice place to relocate. 1) It is totally dependant on what type of house you prefer, how far do you live from your husband's office location etc. But one good thing is ALL apartment rates are available online. So just use Google Maps , find some apartments near your husband's office and look at the rates . There are options for 12month lease (contract) or month-to-month extension. I can assure you its not as expensive like California or New York. 2) South-indian communities are scattered in Dunwoody , lawrenceville and Alpharetta . and there are lots of indian families. you can find them easily once you get settled in an apartment. First thing , decide which area you are planning to move, then search in this forum, you can find some reviews on apartments. 3) Weather does get cold in -20 C during peak winter. But you can adjust eventually. There are lots of heavy wool coats / winter wear for this purpose . Summer gets equally HOT too. It goes to 38C during peak summer. 4) What do you mean by Personal Tax ? you mean IT ? its a standard tax plan . 5) Pre-school costs, again its available online most of the time. Find which Daycare you plan to use for Pre-school and then look this up. It may appear a bit expensive but its not. Dont convert from $ to Rupees. It may range from $40 per week to $200 per week depending on which school u choose. 6) Rentals and Safety again just like india , there are posh locations, and shady/slum locations. It totally depends on where you choose to stay. There are lots of reviews posted online for apartments, so search online and find the right home for you. Gold is still unsafe in general. After coming here get a locker deposit from bank and store it there. Pubic transportation is only available in Downtown and surround 10 miles area. If you come north to Alpharetta, its very minimal. you have bus but not well connected in all streets. Its very rare. you HAVE to learn how to drive a car. be mentally prepared. there is no escape from that.
Hi Ranchu, What will be the expense for a couple with 3 years baby and we are a simple family , i am not working and my husband works for an IT company in India and they are processing his H1 Visa. This will help us to decide whether to relocate or stay in india.
Hi TJsreenath, Atlanta is very nice place to stay in USA as compared to some other states that have extreme weather especially coming from India..there is a lot of greenery, lots of indian restaurants (fast food and dine in), indian grocery stores. Your family can easily manage to stay here in atlanta with just your husbands salary. The chunk of pay goes in rent, perhaps preschool for your baby, but thats about it. food etc does not pay any dent in salary that you get here. when you are coming here, you can bring few festival type clothes for yourself, few casual indian dresses that you like, so you dont have to buy it from here as they will be costly. you can even bring all household masalas for few months....plz do not commit the mistake of staying apart from your husband.. if you mention which area your husband job is, i can help you choose some apartments.. you should be looking for a 2 BHK apartment for rent (or more) but not 1BHK as you have a baby, they dont allow 1BHK for couples with baby here..but there is not much difference in rent between 1 /2 BHK hope it helps!
Hi, My husband work location falls under zip codes 30305 and 30066 Does learning driving is mandatory and if yes what will be the cost in Atlanta. Thanks, SR
Hi SR, You are asking tough questions. If I ask in return about Bangalore would you be able to answer ? It depends on your income vs spending demands. YES driving is a mandatory ! Or else you cannot survive in this city. You cannot go to any store or pick up your kid. Please learn driving in india, and again after coming here you will have to learn it again. But it would be easy if you know steering controls , turns etc.
