I usually focus on the mother - bringing candy/chocolates/reading (books, magazines), cosmetics (some nice lotion or similar) but also something small for the baby. If there are older siblings I also bring something for them.

Recently visited one of my friend and her baby in hospital, bought a bunch of new born cool cotton clothes with varying sizes from 1-12 months and a rug for the baby...Nicely packed them in a ox and gifted it.

There are lot of options, based on how close they are. I too like the idea of Crayoness, focus on mother.

You can find out what the mother can eat and take nice home cooked lunch/dinner.
You can offer few hours stay with mother so that her relatives can go home for a while.

for baby u may take some clothes and diapers.

I normally get a pair of clothes for baby with some home made sweets/food item for mother. I haven't visited any one in hospital as I have 4 year old and hospitals do not allow kids. So I visited couple of friends at home and got dress for new born with some sweets (home made what we consider good for new mom like dry fruit laddoo, moong daal halwa etc)

If it is someone close to the family we have carried laddoos meant to be eaten by moms after delivery or sometimes even raw material needed to make laddoos if they are going to make. Other than that baby clothes set or sleeping sets.
