Lists, lists, lists everywhere I look. Movie lists, bucket lists... What we need here is a Must Read list. We love our books and we love talking about it. But isn't there greater joy in recommending the book we so loved, to our friends. I mean I can't stop raving about the book I just read. So lets make our list.

    Here's how this goes...
    • Pick ten books you have read, that you would recommend to read. You can leave a note saying why you liked that book.
    • You can make any changes to your original list as you wish. Replace one book with another as you keep reading, but just keep the number to ten.
    • You can rate the list as "Your name Top ten Must- Reads", or simply just a list of your recommendations without a rating.

Simple right? So make your list.
I'll start with my list. I am not rating my books, so in no particular order.

    PriniSrini Recommends:

    1. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee ( I like this quote from the book, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view..")
    2. At the Mercy of the Winds by David- Hempleman Adams ( a memoir of a remarkable journey to the north pole in a hot air balloon. Read it to understand perseverance but don't read it on a flight, unless you want to risk painful glares from your co passengers.. )
    3. And Then There were none by Agatha Christie ( Of all the books we've read at the club, this was the best).
    4. Lord of the Flies by Sir William Golding ( loved the subtlety in the book).
    5. A Case of Exploding Mangoes by Mohammed Hanif ( the book is based in our neighbouring country but the satire is so relatable.)

I'll complete the list as I go...Your turn ILites.

The audiobook is pretty good too. I loved how familiar the language and the culture seemed. It could just as well have been a book about India.

Ten is a very small number to adequately represent the books I love. I have chosen these based on my ability to keep going back and rereading them again and again.

    1. Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    2. Cormac McCarthy - Blood Meridian
    3. Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451
    4. George R. R. Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire (series)
    5. Alexander Dumas - The Counte of Monte Cristo
    6. Gabriel Garcia Marquez - 100 Years of Solitude
    7. Herman Hesse - Siddhartha
    8. Fyodor Dostoyevsky - The Brothers Karamazov
    9. Leo Tolstoy - Anna Karenina
    10. Shivaji Sawant - Mrityunjaya (Hindi/Marathi)

    PriyaSrini, Wonderful thread indeed!

Below is my list, rated purely based on my priority and liking, in the given order:

    1. Ponniyin selvan (Tamil) by Amarar Kalki - This Tamil historical novel is one of my all time favourites. Love this book for the strong plot -the plot is built around true historical events that happened in the Chola period, in the life of the mighty Raja Raja Chozan. Also love this for the protaganist Vandhiyadhevan and for the adorable prince Arunmozhivarmar.

    2. The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand - Rand's main characters are typical. They are personifications of her philosophy. Though the novel is full of philosophical ideas, it has enough drama in it to keep us engaged.

    3. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - I felt heavy all through the book, I wanted to cry but couldn't, the emotion is deeper than that. Sometimes I had to stop, relax and continue. Then, when I finished, I cried!

    4. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho - This book definitely creates a positive effect in you. The next time you see the stars you feel them conspire for you, for your goal :)

    5. Yavana Rani and Kadal Pura (Tamil) by Chandilyan - Again two most loved Tamil historics from Chandilyan. The author's writing style is unbeatble, its a feast to read his poetic narration.

    6. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - My favourite of all Jane Austen's.

    7. The Count of Monte Christo by Alexander Dumas - Had this classic as a non-detail story in my class 8 and I loved it then. Later read the full version.

    8. If Tomorrow Comes by Shidney Sheldon - One of the Seldon's I most enjoyed.

    9. Angels and Demons by Dan Brown - The pace of the book is so fast that you will feel like running along with the Protaganist.

    10. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer - My favourite paranormal romance.

    Hi,

Nice to see a lot of new participants here at the forum, Welcome to you all.
It's also good to see some regional books too listed here. I do not want to restrict this list to just include books in English. There are many gems in Indian languages just waiting to be picked up. So :thankyou2: for sharing your lists.

Gauri, I wanted to keep the list short. That way we will deliberate each book and pick the most favoured, besides long lists look clustered.

    Interesting title.

Hi LotusAura thanks for sharing your list. You are a true blue bookaholic. I have read many of the classics you've listed - unabridged versions. Classic were my preferred genre too but now my choice is varied.

My list is incomplete, but I'm in no hurry.
