Dear IL's
I logged in after a long long time. As you may have guessed, I need help and inputs.

Here's the story. Me and my husband moved to Atlanta a few months ago. We are happy, no big fights, no in-law problems, etc. Just one thing missing from our lives is having friends.

After coming to Atl, its become so so hard to meet like minded couple friends to hang out with. It is just me and DH alone doing all activities - going to restaurant, movies, sight-seeing, etc. It was fun in the beginning, as we had a lot of time for ourselves. But off late, my husband feels we need to have friends in our life. I agree with him.

Atleast I can live in the virtual world - talk on phone with old friends, internet, etc. But DH doesn't want to just keep doing that. He wants to meet new people so we can do some activities together. Everytime I hear my colleagues talk about how they spent the new year at a friend's house, or how they went to a movie with their group of friends, I too feel like doing those things. Today, this feeling became extreme and thats why I'm seeking help.

We are simple and nice people, and give space to others. Back in India (Bangalore), we had lots of friends, it was so easy to meet friendly people from all parts of the country. But here it is the opposite . It is so hard to find friends. Almost everyone has a group, and they are not ready to involve with outsiders?!?!?!?! I feel so sad about this.

Please give me some ideas so that we can come across nice couple friends. I have different interests than my husband. I love cooking, crafts, etc. My hubby loves outdoor sports and hates indoors. Few common things we have are - we both love movies, and dining out. But how can we meet someone at movies??

I understand your problem dear.
Forget Atlanta. Do you have any friends (don't have to be close) staying in nearby states ? like carolina's or virginia ?..
Plan a sight seeing trip and visit their house. make friends with them. Invite them over to your place later on. pick up from there.
Are you sure you can't find any colleagues from your hubby's work place whom you can hang out with ?

Thanks for the reply bramvi.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone in nearby places too. All the people I know are either in NY (where I used to work earlier), or in California (many of my college friends who are now not in touch). So we can't visit them often. I have a far relative in Michigan, thats it.

DH works in a small company, and he is not in IT, so no Indians in his office apart from him. From what he tells, all people in his office are of middle age with teenage children.
Most of my colleagues, already have their own groups and always make me feel like a stranger who can't speak their language, or they have kids. I don't have anything against people with kids, but those people want to involve with people having kids of same age so that they can be playmates.

The friends in India always are available on phone, but because of timezone difference I can't talk to them whenever I want. But the one close friend I have here is busy most of the time. After spending almost 4 years in the same company and being very good friends, one of my friend doesn't answer her phone even after I left her a few voice messages. She thinks "out of sight is out of mind" and doesn't bother calling me now.

Sorry, I hate to keep grumbling, but today is a terrible day, and I'm feeling low because of this reason.

 Have you tried some hobby classes yourself. Craft, Dance or yoga? It might take some time for things to click and find people of the same mindset.

Also I have seen meetups posted with like minded people in different cities. Google atlana desi or Indian meetups. I think they usually meet in public places.

Or How about helping out in temple in your area?

Either case I don’t how if you can meet other couples together but maybe if you both individually can pursue your own interests and enjoy that and at the same time see if you might people of same mindset too.

thats not a big problem as you think.....
try to involve urself in some activities.... keep urself buzy the whole day....
purchase some gaming consoles like PS3, Xbox,...... try to join gym.... and keep urself bzy....
u and ur husband can go out for long drives in the weekends.... coz ther's so much 2 explore around.....
try to go for hiking, boating.... this is the time that u two can spend vth each other......
am telling u all this coz am sailing in the same boat s u are....!!!

There are so many local activities in Atlanta. Go to temple and try volunteering you will get lots of friends..
Or post which part of ATL do you live , am sure few IL-ites may be close by to your house.
