Finally, the ‘bride-seeing’ event was over, everyone left and Radhi went back to her room to change into her night-wear.

Sudha walked to Radhi’s room. ‘’Radhi, what do you think of today? Did you like Raakesh and his family?’’ asked Sudha and sat beside her.

Radhi loved her parents very much and didn’t want to disappoint them. But, she couldn’t disappoint herself as well. Finally, she said, ‘’Mom, I liked the chat I had with Raakesh but it doesn’t mean I want to get married to him. I don’t even want to get married.’’

‘’Why dear? Why don’t you want to get married?’’

    ‘’I don’t want to, that’s it’’

‘’Are you sure about what you are saying?’’

    Radhi nodded.

‘’Are you in love with someone? Don’t worry, tell me. We don’t mind getting you married to whoever he is’’

‘’I don’t like to marry. I don’t want to be a slave to someone’’

Sudha was surprised. She never knew her daughter harboured such feelings about marriage.

‘’Why do you think so, darling? Marriage is not what you are thinking. It is a beautiful bond between two people’’

Suddenly, Sudha had a flash in her mind.

‘’Tell me Radhi, did we – your dad and I, did we ever set a bad example to you about marriage?’’

Radhi gave a confused look and before she opened her mouth to answer, Sudha continued.

‘’We are very happy together. Yes, we do have our share of tiffs but there is no relationship without arguments and fights’’

    ‘’Are you bothered about them?’’

Now, it was Radhi’s turn to be surprised. She didn’t imagine that her decision and thoughts would lead to her parents questioning their marriage.

‘’Oh no ma, I didn’t mean to sound that way. I respect you and the bond you share. You and Dad have never made me feel bad about your relationship’’

Sudha felt better. Atleast this is not the reason.

‘’Listen, don’t you trust us? We will not get you married to just about anybody! I am telling you, we will make a thorough verification about the groom and his family before even showing him to you.

If and only if, you like the groom, we will proceed further. And if you want, you both can have upto 1 year time between engagement and marriage so that you understand each other. In fact, we discussed this with Raakesh’s parents and they too agreed.’’

    ‘’Mom! Please!’’

‘Tell me what is bothering you?’’

‘’Nothing ma, please don’t talk about this anymore. I am fed up. It has been only a week since my vacation started and I already have to go through this ‘exhibition’ today. I came here to spend my vacation with you and Dad’’

‘’Okay, let it be for now. What do you want to eat for dinner today? Shall I make your favourite carrot halwa for dessert?’’ Sudha changed the topic.

After a silent dinner, Radhi retired to her room.

Kumar was worried. ‘’Why is Radhi so quiet. Is she not happy? ’’

‘’Radhi is close to you and both of you talk a lot, do you know what is going on with her?’’ Kumar asked Sudha with concern.

‘’She is scared of marriage; it is a normal thing – new family, new people. She will be fine. Everything is just as normal as it can be. Don’t worry Kumar’’

Sudha was worried as well but she wanted to put a tension-free face in front of her husband. She managed to convince him that there was no problem.

Radhi couldn’t fall asleep. She was disturbed. ‘’What if, I am convinced to get married? What if, I become a victim (again!)? What if, my parents will be hurt?’’

She tossed and turned, cried quietly cursing herself. She hated her life.

‘’I wish I could die’’, she thought.

She thought of ways to commit suicide without going through a lot of pain.
