Travelling to India ,with passport expiring in 6 months

    Hi

    My DH is an L1 B holder which expires in Dec 2012 .And his passport expires in Oct 2nd 2012.
    Now we are planning a trip to India on March 31st , reaches India on April 2nd .(exactly six month before expiry) .And we are returning on April 17th and planning to renew his passport from India by tatkal scheme. We are travelling by Etihad via abudhabi
    So my question is 1) will there be any problems entering India ?
    2) Will there be any problem from airlines ?? in some online forum someone mentioned Jet airways need 6 months validity for passports. Our travel agent didnt even ask the expiry date of passport, or its number !!!we got our tickets CONFIRMED
    3) Any problems in Abudhabi-UAE ??

    As you mentioned you reach India before the 6 month mark. I think the passport validity matters only for reentry to US. Make sure you definitely renew the passport before you leave from India else there will be problems while entering US.

    Dear Sister,

    When I was in a foreign land (Singapore) I had renewed my passport in the Indian High Commission with the due endorsement of the Singapore Visa in the renewed passport and came to India and reentered Singapore with No issues at all, just my suggestion still there is a month time for your travel, why dont you renew it there itself.

    Like Somebody said, why dont you renew here itself. My company asked me to renew it here even before travelling, so had to renew (took 3 weeks to renew by postal service) in New York before going to India.

    Thanks for your reply and suggestions..
    From many forums and personal experiences we came to know that Consular passport services are more complicated and tiresome than Passport-Tatkal renewal in India.We get it renewed in 3days in tatkal scheme (but only if we could reach india without any problem !!!) .We know one of our friend who hasnt got his passport for 6 months, because his passport came with incorrect details 2 times. I heard Consulate send this passport to delhi for renewal.and moreover we dont want US address in our passport ,as we are on L1 visa and will be going back in one year !!

    1. Passports applied at Indian missions in US are not sent to India for renewal. 2. US address is no longer printed in Indian passports (not sure if all missions follow the same).

    You are going to your home country. Even if the passport has one day before expiry, it should be okay. Passports are entry documents to foreign countries, not home country.

    True, Passport to enter into India with a days' validity is even fine, but one has to think to go back since their tenure in not yet over, Complications may or may not happen, Try your luck...

    If you go personally to the consulate and submit the documents, you can get the renewed passport in a day or two. If you decide to mail the documents instead, then it can take anywhere between a week and a month.

    Not all Indian consulates provide tatkal passport service. Check with them. If they do, you can apply through that also.
