    Hi All

My DD is 17 months old and drinks whole milk 3 time a day. I did the mistake of not getting her used to a sippy cup earlier on and now she only wants the bottle to drink milk. I have tried giving her milk in a sippy cup, but she probably can't get used to the flow of milk from it and refuses to take it, though she does drink water from it. I would like to stop giving her the bottle as I think it is not good for her teeth. Can someone please give me suggestions?

    Thanks!

Instead of sippy cup you can try cup like elders. Little little you can give.

Thanks, Sudhakrishna and Sravanitenali for the suggestion about glass. I have tried that too, but the problem with her is that when I am giving her anything to drink in a tumbler, she wants to hold it herself and you can imagine how well that would work! She will be 18 months end of this month and I am very worried that she will not get over the bottle and also very concerned about her teeth. I am wondering if I should just suddenly just not give her the bottle at all and only insist that if she wants milk, she will have to drink it in the sippy cup.

Sathyapriya... can you tell me how old your DS is and how many times in a day he drinks milk?

Dentists for children recommend sippy cups to be traded for regular cups by 1 year of age. I dont know how well a baby can handle that, but prolonged use of sippy cups is not the best option.

    peartree,

I struggled with the same problem with my elder kid, so I don't want go through that again. I will wait until he is ready to drink with sippy cup with a straw in it. Here is what I am doing to avoid the problems related to teeth, I use Orthodontic nipples for the bottles. I got this suggestion from my cousin who is a mother of 2 kids and pediatrician herself.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks

    Hi peartree & satyapriya,

even i struggled so much few months back. now my son is 19 months old. he was exclusively breastfed for 1st year and till 17 months.he never took bottle( tried so much) he dint like milk so started adding junior horlicks. dont try sippy cup coz even that is not good for teeth. instead try straw cup. here is how i tried. first i gave water in straw cup. i used to keep the cup on floor or any reachable place. so he himself use to drink little water when ever he come across it. after they get the technique how to take sip. try some juices also. then slowly try giving milk. i used to give him milk with horlicks as soon as he gets up morning. so in his half-sleep he got used to it. but it was not easy. coz when he was not taking with this cup i used to feed him with spoon. imagine 3 times. huh.....but even now he dont drink 16 oz. now a days he learnt squirting the milk after drinking 2 oz. these kids they learn some new tricks every 2 months :( dont worry even this will pass. All the Best.
