    Hi,

My 3 year old has been sick with back to back sinus infection and constant running nose for the last 3.5 months. She has mouth breathing and would snore heavily.
We were advised by ENT that she has enlarged adenoids and they need to be removed surgically? We are hesitant with this kind of surgical treatment at this age.
We are planning to try homeopathy. Have any one of you gone through this?
Please advise. It is very important to make a decision.

    Hi Vidukarth,

I am not sure how useful this would be for you to take a decision.. but just sharing my experiences.
My son too had this problem which was a bit severe at the age of 3 with heavy snoring and breathing through his mouth but when we consulted doctors here, they suggested not to go for a surgery as long as his food and fluid intake is normal. He will be turning 5 in May '12 and he has improved a lot in the past year. One tip which was given by lot of elders that I'm following is, I give him 1 glass of warm water when he gets up in the morning and after brushing his teeth I'll take the phlegm out as much as possible. This has been pretty helpful.

Also, my elder sister's son had the exact problem at the age of 3 and they went for a surgery for my nephew and it wasn't really that helpful and she too suggested me not to go for a surgery from her own experiences.

My daughter had the same problem .She had both tonsils and adenoids and the ENT suggested for a surgery and we went for it and now she is absolutely normal. It was a laser treatment and nothing to worry about it.

My daughter was very bad in her food intake and before hand the ENT asked us about the food problem and guaranteed us that she will start eating good once the surgery is done. And she really started eating good after the surgery and I am much relieved then. Before surgery she would eat 1 idli for nearly half an hour and I struggled a lot to feed her.

    Dear marula,

thanks for your response. So it got cured automatically? when you say, you would take the phlegm, is it through the suction bulb from the nose? did he have constant running nose and did it go off automatically?
I visited ENT and would now go to my pediatrician and ask for her opinion on it. My daughter generally is fussy, but i can force feed her by changing her attention, and she would eat normally. she is generally very playful and when she is hungry she would ask me,. hence am assuming her food intake is okay. her bowels, urination is all normal. i personally do not want to go for a surgery as she is just 10.25 kgs for 3 years and one of family doctors in India who is an ENT specialist said that they should be atleast 15 kgs minimum. Also, am planning to try homeopathy medication from India.. any thoughts on that?
    thanks again for your response.

    Dear Hema,

Thanks for your response. Can you please tell me at what age did you go for the surgery and how much did your daughter weigh? So, after that she is okay and not having any issues, atleast i mean frequent issues. I would assume kids get sick when they goto school, so do you any reduction in the frequency?
Do they give a local anesthesia when they do the treatment? So, will kids be sleeping at that time? Are parents allowed at the time of the procedure? For my daughter, ENT said tonsils are okay and only problem is adenoids.
I am planning to go to my ped and ask her opinion on this?

Was she having constant running nose and sinus infections prior to this? Did her voice change after this treatment?

Thanks for your time and response.

Oh my vidhu, so many questions:)

She was 4 yrs at that time.

Before the surgery often she used to get affected with cold, running nose followed by ear pain.I had so many sleepless nights due to my girl suffering from severe ear pain without knowing what else can be done to reduce the pain.

Atleast twice a month we used to visit our doctor and the doctor said she had pus in her ear and that is causing the pain.He wanted us to do an hearing aid test and the test showed nearly 40% hearing loss in one ear.The other ear was fine.We were shocked to know about that.

He recommended us to a child ENT .

The ENT said that she has got adenoid, tonsils and due to that there was a liquid formation in the ear leading to the ear pain.So he suggested us for the surgery of adenoid and tonsils and also placing a fine tube in her ear to collect the liquid that is formed .And we agreed to that.

Yes they gave anesthesia .But she said she could feel them turning her face and doing something to her but not the pain.No we're not allowed during the surgery.

After the surgery she cried for pain for one or two days and later the pain reduced and we were suggested to give only cold foods and ice cream to her for three days so that the pain will come down.

After the surgery there was a great difference in her health and food intake.

We were asked to come and remove the tube from the ear and again asked us to do an hearing aid test to see if the hearing loss has come down. And as he said, we did the test and the hearing loss percentage has come down and God we were relieved so much. Her voice didn't change.

All these were done when we were in India and now after coming to US she never gets ill.May be once in six months or an year. She is perfectly fine. And her age now is going to be 8 yrs.The ear pain has gone completely.:)

    Dear Hema,

Thank you very much for your response with such details. I really appreciate it. My daughter doesn't get much ear infection and her ears are fine. she has only sinus infection all the time. Today i went to her pediatrician and she has put her on another 3 week dose of antibiotics and asked us to record her sleep just to make sure if she doesn't have sleep apnea. If that is the case, she wanted us to treat it.Otherwise, she has asked us to wait till May before we decide on the surgery.

I am hoping she will get well. I can very well understand about sleepless nights as we are in the same phase now.

I will let you know how it goes.

    Thanks Hema.

    Hi!Vidukarth

I guess you have got the answer to your questions. It depends from child to child. My brother and me had tonsil(adenoids) issue when we were small but managed to get past it without surgery. My son will be turning 3 in March, goes to daycare and has frequent infections, snoring at night. One doctor adviced surgery and another said he will outgrow it in time. So we haven't given a thought for the surgery, his infections are much lower than the last year.

    Good luck

    Bhagawathy
