Move over beer, bootleg and beedis. It’s time for espressos, smoothies and Starbucks. It’s no longer going to be Middle-aged desi boys speaking Bollywood Hindi on Oxford Street or Trafalgar Square. The southern star-in-transformation, Simbu aka STR (TR Silambarasan), and his debutant director, Vignesh Selva, are joining the club. They have just finished canning an uber-chic Tamil movie titled Podaa Podi in the British capital. It’s shot entirely in London and is billed as Simbu’s costliest film till date. According to the director, this is an Indian film that has been shot in London for the longest period — six months. The film has been in-the-making for a long time, which the director attributes to the consistency of season that the unique look and feel of the film demanded. The film traverses three phases of the life of a girl and a boy who come from different backgrounds. Simbu’s heroine in the film is a ravishing Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, an Anupam Kher-trained debutant, and daughter of Tamil actor Sarathkumar. According to the director, this is an Indian film that has been shot in London for the longest period — six months. The proof: a baby who features as a new-born in the movie was six months old by the time the director declared pack up. To capture the escapist landscape of London and some never-before-shot locales, Simbu and company roped in British cinematographer Duncan Telford. By the way, Simbu had also claimed he would rope in a Hollywood A-lister to act alongside him. No evidence of that, though.
