Two things happened in the last week that was in absolute contrast with one another....the nation rejoiced for one and prayed for another. Both news concerned children.

Norway finally decided to return the Bhattacharya kids to India on condition that the uncle takes custody of them. India rejoiced. Earlier when the news was out about the kids, there was outrage... “how dare they take away the kids”, “it is natural for a parent to raise their hand on the kids on occasion...nothing wrong in giving a good old fashioned spank on the bottom to discipline...these Norwegians are crazy” so went the reaction. When the news came that after 8 long months, the children will finally get back to india... the entire country rejoiced albeit with a few people raising questions whether the parents were really at fault., and was there more to it than met the eye.

The next one which was heartbreaking was the story of the baby “FALAK”.... this 2 year old baby was brutalised, kicked, even bitten and is now fighting for life at AIIMS, Delhi. The police and authorities are yet to find out who did this to her. The headlines and the news channels screamed, ‘the country prays for Falak”, there were demands to hang and quarter the depraved sick people who did this to her.

I don’t understand, what were the neighbours doing when this child was being relentlessly brutalised? When this child was beaten black and blue, she would have been crying... did no one notice? Was there not even one kind soul that enquired where the cry wsa coming from or who the child was...or what was wrong with her? Or have we become too indifferent and desensitized to other peoples suffering... or did we turn a deaf ear saying it was none of our business... such tragic news on TV has become part of our dinner routine...to be consumed along with food. Sad really!

On one hand we have Norway which comes down heavily on poor parenting and on the other we have a kid in india who is beaten black and blue and no one knew it...or noticed it. For every falak saved, there are so many kids who are beaten, abused by parents themselves in the name of instilling discipline., tortured by unscrupulous employers and we don’t even know or even if we knew, we don’t care or we don’t want to involve ourselves.

What is wrong with us? Where are we moving? Why do we always act/ react late? We as Indians, desperately need an attitude change. .. we need not be as over enthusiastic in protecting the children as Norwegians but atleast we can keep our eyes and ears open and report when something is amiss., especially when it concerns helpless kids.

I am not generalising here, In india we dont care much about many things as westerners do and one among that is abt children.. Child care, pschology all are at the backseat in our society..
Its default to produce a kid after marriage, the capability of parents(financial/emotional preparedness) to bring up a healthy happy child was never considered..
What more can we expect from the country where child labour is still persists in few places...It would take further more longgg time to see some effective laws for children in our country....
I remember a case which i read recently newspaper in TN about child molestation of kindergarden child.. The abusers were school authorities itseems... First case was with TN police who got medical examination's done and reports confirmed the molestation.. Police were dragging the case and the kid's parents apealed in court and court asked for CBCID investigation again there was lot of time delay the CBCID gave reports like teachers and school authorities cant molestate the kid and asked for another medical examination for the kid..
This time court got really furious and blasted the officials, rejected any further medical examination and moved the case to CBI.. The highest judicial authority like courts itself cant expedite these kinda of cases...
Thought abt the mental trauma the parents and the innocent kid has to go thorough.. Isnt it atrocious...
In future If anybody come across what they would do is, silently move the kid to different school and only help the kid to forget the incident... They wont come out and complain... Many kids will silently suffer...

Sumitha, all I can say is that your signature will give you the answer to your why?

Don't want to say anything more for fear of saying more than I really should.

Yaeh,Its heart breaking,:( when I view it,what kind of people they are?The culprits need to be punished. No one cannot even imagine to assault the 2 year old angel. People are going crazy,in earning money,so that they dont have the minimum patience for a baby.I think , there might be some serious issue , making the child as a scape goat.
we all pray for the speed recovery of the child.

    My dear Mansi
I wish you had not posted this thread. At my age, I find it a lot easier to believe, like Robert Browning, that 'God is in His Heaven and all is right with the world'. The brutal treatment meted out to this two year old in Delhi has made me really skeptical about His existence. The Almighty must be in real dilemma whether to go after the culprit and prise out his innards as He did to Hiranyakasipu or rush to save the little one. Both seem highly improbable as of now and if He washes His hands off both, I'll wash my hands off Him!

So true....!! We have a ministry of women and child development which is supposed to take care of the welfare of children...but like everything else in this country, this ministry too is found sleeping until it is too late. Late reaction and too little action is the bane of our nation.

I read about that incident you mention.... it was really sad. If the people (TN Police) who are supposed to take action against the culprits behave like this ...what is to say about common people....what will they do and where will they go?. Child abuse is the worst kind of abuse and this kind of attitude makes the victims become victims over and over again...no wonder many hush it all up fearing this kind of reaction!!!

    Thanks shruthi for joining in.
