Well well, don't be too quick in assuming! No no, not a dream like Matin Luther King Jr. You see there is just one little difference - he said "have" and I said "had". Yes, I am speaking of just a dream, us normal regular human beings have literally on day to day to basis or should I say "night to night basis"?

Ask anyone, who has moved to a foreign country - except for one particular French couple I know who shipped a container, almost every one else will agree that we all come in with four suitcases to four walls and a phone! And then they keep us company - the walls when we are alone setting up the house, decking those very walls up, that phone connecting us with people we love and getting us in touch with others and of course the four suitcases which will help us go back and forth between the two homes, taking stuff and bringing back stuff.

My trip to India is coming up but not for another 6 months atleast - I just returned 5 months ago for crying out loud! Anyways, usually packing is a logistics problem taking into consideration the longer duration of the stay, the various functions, planned and unplanned travels and visits, the presents etc. and it is easy to see how the four suitcases can get full quickly and easily! And if in all sincerity I do take less and manage the whole two months with just three dresses, almost all the relatives, far and near feel an obligation to present me with more dresses - they do get tired of seeing me in those 'same' clothes which are outdated anyways by the then current Indian trends, according to them and there you go, my suitcases in no time are full again. Then there is this aunt or that aunt who has visited me in the past and had noticed what was lacking in my house and made it a point to keep it ready so that I can bring it back and all that yummy food that gets specially made and trust me, dispite the grand plan to leave some/most of the things back, there are all those things that I end up buying and I am back to bringing four full suitcases again - you know the story now!

Is it a surprise that I am already dreaming about the four suitcases? Only I dreamt that I was travelling very very light because of which I was literally floating like a feather. Oh what a moment to feel like that - as that light yellow feather drifting off? And then what do I see, my orchids in bloom? Well that woke me up to reality, with a startle and a thought "how did I miss not noticing my orchids getting ready to bloom?" for I love them and watch them and talk to them even - I love the whole process of how long they take to start even to form the little branch with a little indication of a probable bud and those little buds and then those beautiful blooms that seem to stay for ever and ever! I came down running and was relieved to see that the buds were just forming as I had remembered seeing the previous night and that there were no flowers yet and it was all a dream. After all waiting for my orchids to bloom is the present and those suitcases....let me deal with that when it is time!

Sabitha,
If in your dream, you saw a flower bloom, then it means that your desires are going to be met soon..( this is not dream psychology, but that's what I thought, when I read those lines :) )

Very true, 4 suitcases..when we pack it from here..I would think, if we give all the presents or other things, 3 suitcases would be empty or light to carry it back..this calculation always go wrong, as per your explanation. :biggrin2:

Hi Sabitha,

Talking of your dream of travelling light, have to admit this is an art I still have not perfected. I always have a nagging doubt that what I am carrying with me is not going to suffice. Eventually when I return home, I find 2/3 of the stuff I carried with me (just in case - in this case in a suitcase) was never used after all. :bonk

As for the orchids, mine are blooming too, right now. :)

Dear Srama
Being a hardcore daydreamer, I would settle for 'day to day basis'. Martin Luther King belonged to the class so eloquently described by Abdul Kalam. He says that dreams are not those you get when you sleep but those which do not allow you to sleep. But I prefer to dream those dreams that help me to sleep better. I have now reached that stage of senility when sleeping is a lot easier during the day than at night! I have a singular capacity for forgetting my dreams the moment I wake up. Then how do you say that you dream, you may ask. Elementary, my dear Watson! If my wife asks me what was it that I was blabbering about during my sleep the moment I wake up, I know that I have had a dream. See, I too use the word 'Had'. Nice to join your exalted company.

Ever since, Kalam has warned that dreams are those that do not let you sleep, I have become very choosy about the kind of dreams I should dream. As the purpose of everything in life is to let us have a peaceful slumber, I avoid all the Kalamish kind of dreams to guard against the Kalamity, I mean calamity, of losing my sleep.

When you talk of the floating feather, I remember the opening scene of the Oscar Winning Movie, Forrest Gump. The screenplay describes it thus:
A feather floats through the air. The falling feather.
A city, Savannah, is revealed in the background. The feather floats down toward the city below. The feather drops down toward the street below, as people walk past and cars drive by, and nearly lands on a man's shoulder.
He walks across the street, causing the feather to be whisked back on its journey. The feather floats above a stopped car.The car drives off right as the feather floats down toward the street. The feather floats under a passing car, then is sent flying back up in the air. A MAN sits on a bus bench. The feather floats above the ground and finally lands on the man's mud soaked shoe. The man reached down and picks up the feather. His name is FORREST GUMP.
It was a very impressive opening scene that I had ever come across. That floating feather symbolises the whole life of Forrest Gump.

"Waiting for my orchids to bloom"! During our entire life, we wait for something or other. Some irritate us like waiting for that dish in a snobbish restaurant when you are ravenously hungry and can't even utter a word. Some increase our pulse rate in geometric progression like waiting for the loved one. Some fill our heart with unbounded joy like waiting for a flower to bloom. And if it is orchid, the joy is multifold!

Ha ha ....Thank you Srini...perhaps and just knowing that brings a smile and warmth. Thank you for those words.

Never fails, does it - how many ever times we go back and forth, it is the same story! Thank you for your feedback Srini.

How classic Satchi! It is so true isn't it? See that is why I bring 3 or 4 dresses to India much to the irritation of all younger cousins who are so fashion conscious!

fantastic. What color are they? As much as I want you to share pictures here, I would rather you share it in the gardening forum - you know for all sel fish reasons! Do come and post there! will you?

However true that is sir, it is indeed a bit unsettling. But then that is why they are all so great!

Ha ha ha - you are welcome sir and it is a delight to have your company :)

Only you can give such a lovely and beautiful response quoting so many and yet keeping the humor intact! From you answer I gather that when we are younger probably our dreams will/should not allow us to sleep only to be replaced with dreams as we sleep to needing to start day dreaming so that we may drift off to sleep. Well atleast they are important in every phase of our life and it is good to know that. Now I can sleep in peace :)

That is such a lovely explanation of the scene in the movie sir - I 'had' watch it long long ago and seem not to remember much about the movie except for a very young Tom Hanks. Your reference to it time and again has led me to tell my DH that that is going to be the movie of the week for us this weekend. Hopefully I will see it in a new light and find appreciation for such a classic. Thank you for letting me know about it.

Seriously Cheeniya sir, I was awaken startled for I was indeed a feather floating towards my orchids in my dream - it was a lovely feeling and i felt extremly relieved that I was more anxious, feather or otherwise and in waiting to see my orchids to bloom than anything else. I think in a way it is a blessing especially after knowing what it is to wait ..... be it in irritation or anticipation or frustration! It is indeed a feeling of unbounded joy to wait, watching the plant every single morning without fail and you know something else sir, this was a rescue orchid - whole another story anyways this plant makes sure it has only two leaves throught out the year, perhaps just to bloom every year and I would like to think for me!

Thank you for such a delightful feedback dear Cheeniya Sir - now I am off to read up a little more about Dr.Kalam, get that Forrest Gump and wait for the blooms in joy! Perfect weekend recipe! Thank you!
