I was actually wondering what to call this post.
Today In lunch I noticed few guys talking very animatedly at a distance. There was so much energy flowing around them that I was actually staring at them. I would have continued so but I released they are communicating in sign language and they can’t express in sounds and am not sure about hearing.
They were a very big group and I don’t know what kind of job profile they are working in a IT company. Mostly probably fresher from some college
Their expressions and communication was so exuberant that I felt I am in the midst of noisy environment whereas I was actually in completely silence. I could not help but feel the energy. There was this guy communicating with another guy farther away. When they were communicating they completely took over my attention as if they were actually shouting. I had to forcefully avert my eyes.
I think I actually felt jealous of liveliness, energy or whatever .
Actually dont have much to add but I kind a felt like sharing the feeling I experienced but ended up not being able to as I felt:hide:

    Dear zingy
In the early '70s, I saw a movie titled 'Koshish' starring Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Badhuri. It was about a deaf and mute couple and their struggle in life. It was a landmark movie in Hindi cinema. Throughout the movie, they communicated only through sign language. No dialogue was there and yet , we could feel their anguish, their love for each other and their joy when they got a child who was not deaf and mute like them as they feared.

I have seen students of an Institution for the deaf and mute talking to each other in sign language and when the tempers run high among them, they continue to talk through sign language and yet we can feel that all is not well with them. In fact, more energy is generated when no words are spoken. I can visualise the scene you have portrayed so well. After all, communication through spoken words is only of a recent origin compared to man's overall existence on this planet!

    Zingy,

I have an incident to narrate to explain what you are feeling. Almost 13yrs ago we were living in Turkey and had decided to take a vacation to the interior regions. We reached our destination but did not know hot to go to the actual place, so approached a stranger and asked him. He politely indicated in signs that he will lead us - we were used to people telling things in signs for they didnot speak English and we didnot speak Turkish! But this gentleman surprised us when he politely got on the bus, took us all the way (about an hours travel) and left us where we wanted. During this one hour our conversation continued in sign languages and we realised that he actually was really mute. Trust me if I say this was the best conversation we have had in Turkey - by the end of that ride, we had seen his family pictures, he had written down his address, pointed out sights of interest, taken the guide book from our hand and pointed out what to read and all that.....so I do personally understand the energy you are speaking of for there is communication really happening there and not just banter.

Thanks to your post, I could share a much cherished exprience.

    zingy,
Sign language, I don't know about that till I came over here and saw that they were taught in the Kindergarten class..the alphabets in sign language. Those are interesting subtle gestures on hand and I also tried some, in an enthu..with the diagram as the guide.
Your post is making think to search for that small paper and know the alphabets once again.

I also know a family here, where the mom communicates with her son, in sign language. In TV's too.. the evangelists..have some people in their group, and it is shown as PIP (picture in picture) style to communicate with those who cannot hear.

    Zingy,

I am sure you have seen the silent indian national anthem , and you are moved and even stand up in attention without your knowledge. what the voice could not achieve..and there is another speech (well noise that made me spell bound and left me speechless and even others silence..) though it is not in context here. The girl who silenced the world for 5 min! Must watch. - YouTube

I have been in close quarters of a deaf and dumb person, a brother of a classmate. there is something so serene about the communication that touched a few chords when i was a student, to the extent i picked up a few signs that faded with time.

the silence in the silence speaks more than the noise of the world..

Cheeniya , Thanks for the sharing
I am havent watched the movie but now it is now on my watch list.

so true .their communication is so vibrant and the happiness is infectitous. It is too difficult to avert your eyes esp when every action of them communicates so many things . Difficult to comprehend yet you feel it.
