    Hello Friends :hiya

I'm looking to start swim classes. I have learnt swimming in my childhood but never practiced after that. So I think getting myself into a lesson might be the best way to start. I have a lot of questions. Here they go :)

1.In US, where can I learn swimming? I know that YMCA and some community colleges offer classes. Any preference or difference between the two?

2.When I visited some pools, the college pools were quite deep,4ft to 12 ft. YMCA pools were 3 ft to 5 ft. Does this mean the beginner classes go on in the 12 ft section:hide: ?
    I'm little worried on this.

    3. What abut post-swim odor? Does the body and hair smell very strongly of chorine? any tips here(may be a body wash with scent would help or mist?)I would shower before and after swimming

    4. Is it a good idea to buy a cap and ear plugs?

    5. Final question - it is the DEAD of winter in the north-east and the pools are indoor. So will the water be heated? I called some pool desks and some said heated others said not heated but temp is 70 . Not sure what temp works?

Appreciate any help :) Thank You.

Great to learn swimming. Good luck. The pools will be heated. Don't worry. I use only cap. Shower before and after. Look at local community may give classes too. Sometimes the same people will teach in community colleges and YMCA.

    Enjoy.

Beginners classes won't usually go on in the deep end of the pool-at a community college, they often have sports teams (water polo, etc) that would use that end, or water safety/lifeguard/water rescue classes. Our CC has a firefighter/paramedic training course that uses the deep end.
I prefer the YMCA, because you won't be dealing with college students as fellow learners, who are there for college physical education credits (unless these are continuing education classes <no credit>).

    Thanks cissyboo.
I'm relieved to know that we don't use the deep end LOLZ
Yes, these classes are continuing education classes(no credit).
do you have any tips for not smelling of chlorine? I'm little worried about that and would not want my class mates to get the stench(I need to go for my classes after the swim classes!!).

There are classes for beginners (6-7 classes costs roughly around $70 for non members and some extra to use the facility) You can also check with them if there are any adult beginner groups. In YMCA only the kids pool is heated. The pool which they teach is not heated. But 5 minutes in water you will be fine.

About chlorine, as they are indoor pools, the chlorine effect is more. Take shower after you come out of the pool, use a water resistant sunscreen before you go into the pool, a swimming cap would definitely help your hair. Thats pretty much it.

And one more quick note, if you are prone to ear infections, try using ear plugs, else its not necessary.
    Happy swimming :thumbsup

    thank you keerthana.
wow, the water is cold? It is dead of winter here and that worries me.
ok silly question - is it ice cold? or just lukewarm?

So a shower after the swim lesson should keep us away from any chlorine odor isn't it? I hope the odor does not linger even after a good shower :(

Yes, I have bought a swim cap and will buy ear plugs.

For sure the water will not be ice cold but not lukewarm also. Somewhere in between.
If you are scared of cold water, may be you can visit your nearest YMCA and check it in person before enrolling.
    Hope this helps....

Yes Keerthana - I will visit this ymca branch. I am a Y member actually, so it is probably better for me to take classes at the Y itself instead of at a college. Thanks :)

Can you please tell me about your swim experiences in YMCA. I'm planning to join in the beginner adult 45 mins and was wondering what to expect.

    Thanks in advance!
