    Hi Ladies!

First of all - let me wish you all a wonderful New Year! Hope you and your families have a happy and prosperous one where all your dreams come true! :thumbsup

I have some wedding shopping to be done and the only time that is convenient for me is in January. I was wondering whether Saree shops are open in Chennai even on Sundays so that I can travel there over the weekend and do some shopping. Also, is it true that if I come after Pongal, that selections will be limited in the stores??

And btw, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to where I can buy wedding favors from for a cheap price. I am looking for some small jewelery boxes (types with some kundan stones on top) or kundan work mirrors or those types of items for a cheap price and to buy as a huge lot (about 400 pcs) - are there any good shops to buy such items?

And also need to get some recommendations on where I can get wedding invitations from? :D

Btw, do any of you have any personal favorites to do your saree shopping from apart from the big names, (i.e. Pothys, RMKV etc.)

Hope to hear from you all soon :)

    thanks heaps!

    Hi Gothai,

A very Happy New year to you and all Indus Ladies....
Most of the shops in Chennai will remain open in the weekend.

For wedding invitations, there are a lot of shops in Liberty, kodambakkam. Menaka cards is one of the
    famous shops for invitations.

Palam Silks in Pondy bazaar has quite good collections of silk sarees. I'd been there only once but I liked the collections there when I went.

    Best Regards,
    Sharmila

Most of the shops in T.Nagar are open even on sundays.

Menaka cards are the best in invitations.Visit their website to get an idea.

There is a shop called 'Dreams Come True' in Prince Plaza,Egmore. They have tons of imitation jewellery, bangles(hugggeee collection),plus other accesories. This is just for your info.

Nalli is the best in silk sarees(the old showroom),then Pothys.I personally find Pothys to be very innovative in their designs, most of their designs depict saree designs worn by Raja Ranis in the past.

For the jewellery box types I've seen them in mylapore temple side shops.

    Happy shopping!

The `best' shops for sarees varies year to year. Currently I think the following are good (we experience sit in Nov-Dec ), apart from the standard shops:

Hayagriva Silks, G N Chetty Road, T Nagar - wide range, lovely colours, excellent service. Prices are comparable to Pothys etc.
Sundari Silks, North Usman Road- patchy experience, but some excellent gems if you are lucky on the day
Palam Silks on TTK Road- this is their new shop, and the range is totally different from their Pondy Bazaar shop, have a look. It is a bit on the expensive side, but if you want a leisurely experience, good choice and reasonable service, it is worth a look.
Saarangi in Chetpet- if you are looking for old patterns or unusual sarees not available anywhere else, and dont care about the cost, then go here. It IS very expensive but every saree is wearable. Warning, service is pretty poor.

Thank you so much ladies for all your responses :D I popped by Menaka cards' website and seems a little onto the pricey side...do you think the physical shop is cheaper than the website as the website maybe targetting customers who are earning in Dollars?? hehe!

You can get good wedding cards at Olympic. here is the link... http://www.olympicweddingcards.com/

There are many shops to choose from for good silk sarees. We normally go to Kumarans. There is a beautiful collection of lehengas and bridal sarees in Varsidhi Silks (Varsidhi - Tradition Transformed. Bridal sarees, Designer lehengas sarees, Salwar Suits, Embroidered sarees, Silk sarees, Bridal wedding lehengas, Kanchivaram sarees, lehngas from India)

If you take a walk down Parrys. Mint Street, Godown Street there are many shops for almost everything. Here the variety is more than just the authentic South Indian taste.

As our friend suggested, Dreams Come True is a one stop spot for artificial costume jewellery, bangles, bindis and accessories.

Hope you have a great shopping time!!!
