Of course we all want a clean home and a beautiful kitchen. We make it happen either by our own hard work, sometimes with help from maids or very often like in my case through spring cleaning which means a sparkling home presented once a year :) Apart from the biannual giving away of clothes and some kitchen stuff, the only other time believe me that I go through the inside out of my house is, during spring cleaning when I really try to eliminate what I don't need.

However, this year has been slightly different - with kids growing up, they have wanted different rooms and with a boy and a girl, you know the story - from barbies to cars, princesses to dragons, numbers to hearts, solar system display light to a castle display light....., everything is polar opposite! And bless them, they have been sharing a room all these years, this dispite having enough rooms in the house. Now this alloting of different rooms has invariably forced me to enter the other two unused rooms in the house and boy oh boy! the amount of books that I have collected, it is amazing! Now as you can imagine with a 2week winter break, what I have been upto. Yes, cleaning, sorting and giving away.

Anyways, all this cleaning brings me to the topic of my discussion. I have often argued with some friends that more space in the house is an invitation to hoard and accumulate more stuff and some of them have argued that it is the other way round - they need room for all that stuff they already have! I don't know if I agree or not but I do know that the moment my space becomes cluttery, I stop! yes, in my tracks, take a serious look around and the cleaning mania begins. Now you know why I don't want a bigger house!! I have other things to do than just clean you know - since I can't get much help here!

And then it is just not about cleaning you know. Honestly, I really simply do not like bare walls or corners or rooms that are empty and when I fill, I do want to fill with purely personalized, meaningful stuff - nope no store bought brighten the room decorations for me! But then, that is my personal preference! Now imagine giving me a big house!!

This does not mean, I don't love big houses - I do, just when they are someone else's! Just kidding. And I do know you Ilites out there have your own personal preferences and reasons as well to what you want or have. It would be so wonderful if you come forward and share your opinions and even a few pictures if you so please!

Can't wait to hear from all of you and will sign off thanking a dear friend - she knows why :)

Rama,

Loved your write up! :)
I like big house with less things.
Being a (selective) minimalist, I have good control over what comes inside the house and what goes out.
So no hoarding problems either. So spacier the better..

Sabitha I am right there with u honey. I love a small house with very few things.
Only caveat it needs a big kitchen ..I love to cook and bake and as a family we spend 90 % of the time in hte kitchen.
We came to this country with 4 suitcases. Soon we bought a large house with unimaginable amount of space.
DH loves to hoard and every inch of the space was used up ...
Then came the pain of moving and we had to move into a much smaller house .The move was painful a. At a point we had $$$ cars out in the drive way and junk in the garage( typical american style). It took me 3 years to clean the mess. We finally have the cars in and junk out.
I will stick to the mantra..less space is better when it comes to some people. It forces us to prioritize what we really really want to keep.

oh JAG thank you!! Now I feel better :)
I hear you and that is why I love these open kitchen plans here!

You did it neverthless! No wonder they call this a throw away country and with the habit being able to fix anything and reuse in India, to change a habit becomes some what hard!

I am with you, sometimes less space makes it easier for us to proiritise!

Thank you for your feedback JAG!

I like a smaller home. So when we had to buy a home, my husband wanted a single family, but I went for a town home. My reasons were - smaller, easily manageable and most importantly live in close promiximity with people so kids can mingle with other kids. I was lucky as in I got a spacious town home, coz when I compared the rooms of this one vs single family, this one had bigger rooms. The only thing is I need to clear away the clutter. I am not much of a shopper, yet there is some and it is hard to clear it...just because I hate to throw away hard earned money:-(

Srama,I too like big spaces not becoz I like to pile things . I like some breathing space around. I dont particularly hoard and make it smaller. But I like big spaces so that each person has their own space. So that nobody is on top of another. I dont particularly like adding all the toppings in a room like a dresser ,nighstands ,bench, mirrors and anything else done.I make minimal choices so each room has enuf space to walk around and feel comfy just looking.A bed, small nightstands and small tv will do in my case.

all valid reasons rose282!

funny and nice how things work out sometimes don't they! You got your DHs need for space and your style in one :thumbsup !
You are not the only one dealing with this rose!! All that mail alone that we get for junk and if you have the habit of subscribing to new papers/magazines, God alone save us! As long as it is manageable clutter, I think it is ok!

Thank you for posting here rose!

That certainly is a good reason to want space chocolate!! and certainly it is enjoyable if you are not a hoarder!
Now that is heaven!! Another great way of not accumulating just because we can or is the way! Love the idea.

Thank you choclate for your feedback!

Nice topic ladies,

I don't like a big house or a small one -just right one is the best.it should be spacious and well maintained.clutter and unwanted stuff irritates me.minimum furniture looks nice.nothing should be left outside when not in use.it should all be back in the cupboards.i like a good amount of space within the house to move around easily.our ancestral home in the village is a very big one -it looked so perfect and complete then with lots of people[joint family].but now only my granny lives there with a personal help.she loves to live there with all those memories.but i would feel lonely in such a big empty house .
