As another year draws to its end and the birth of a new one is to commence, it has a way of surfacing so many emotions and memories, some joyful and some not so joyful.

Its been a roller-coaster year for me and my family. My mother relapsed and has been fighting cancer, but I am beside her in her fight and she knows that 'we' are fighting it out. Then my marriage happened in between, all in peculiar circumstances, now, I am so excited to know from my wife this week, that she is pregnant and I have been floating around thrilled all week and in abundance.

Life is beautiful because of the surprises, happiness and the shocks we receive time and again. When we are happy we take it for granted that we deserved it. But it is the unexpected shocks of pain and suffering that invokes philosophical thoughts and questioning of faith arises.

But, faith and prayer gives us the strength and energy to face the situation with guts and courage. Love and understanding take us a long way in our day to day life.

"Give like a small sun: touch the world with shafts of your light; bring smiles into bloom like flowers."

The quote above is relevant only when there is a need for light, smiles and simple joy. This logically means the existence of pain, the flip side of happiness.

We are human and like happiness, pain is part of the journey.

I, for one, have gained so much and lost a lot too. I have realised, that if we ever allow ourselves to love anyone or anything for that matter, pain is an integral part of the process because some day we may, probably will, lose that person, place or thing to which we have become attached, either physically, mentally, circumstantially or emotionally. Of course, the price of NOT - not loving, not seeking, not becoming involved, is a much deeper and emptier pain that strips away at ones soul and destroys ones spirit.

So, here is to those in pain, I pray you connect with your Self (Divine or God or whatever it is), that is bigger than anything, miracles await you.

Advance Happy New Year wishes to all! May this new year bring to you all that you wished for.

    ASpire,

Congrats to you and your familly..and lots more happiness your way..

There is never gain without pain is the ultimate truth, and you need the pain to realise that you have a gain or you don't even feel the blessings around you...and the moment we realise this and the SELF we are towards being better as a person..

And i have been working at it, and feel i am better at it as a person..lot of things that would have irked don't any more..

may the new year bring lots more..

    Hi,
Wonderful post. I like the above words to the core. Happiness brings expansion, but difficulties bring depth.
Both are in the same coin. It is painful to lose something or somebody dear, but it is more painful to feel that nobody is there to lose or share or gain.
Wish you all a happy new year!

    Dear Aspire....

Lovely snippet n well timed one...

Congrats for the sweet news.....Sorry to hear anout your mother may God give her strength during this phase...
Yes life is a mixed bag of happiness n sadness...If we have only one thing we will soon get bored of life...Without sadness the worth of happiness cannot be measured and without happiness the pain of sadness cannot be fathomed... so life is full of contradiction.... What is important is that during these phases we should not lose our equanimity....thats why to keep our sanity intact we take refuge of God n If we can fully surrender to him then still better....

    Advanced Happy New Year....2012

    Hello Aspire

Nice to read this. Congrats for the good news and sad to hear about your mom. Hope your mom recovers soon, and let the Lord give her the courage to fight it out.

Happiness and pains are like 2 sides of the coins. When it gets tossed you always land up with surprises.

Hi VJB, thank you for your wishes. So nice to see your feedback. Yes, life is a mixed back and thats what keeps the surprises for us.

There is an old Chinese saying that goes, “If you live with a problem long enough, it could eventually become a blessing”. Within every adversity in life, there is always a seed of an equivalent or greater benefit. We have to look for it - find it - and act on it.

We learn courage - when we face danger. We learn patience , when we endure suffering. We learn tenderness , when we taste pain. We learn to prize true friends , when false ones forsake us. We treasure health , when illness strikes. We learn to prize freedom , when we are in danger of losing it.

How can we possibly become a strong person, if we have an easy life? The tougher it is, the tougher we have a chance to become if we choose to fight back. Tough times never last but tough people do, thats what I keep telling my mom.
