[JUSTIFY]Kolams or Rangoli as we all know is a cherished tradition of South India. It is drawn in front of the house with coarse rice powder to invite Goddess Lakshmi, to provide food to ants and other small insects. During festivals it takes colourful forms. Tamizh month Margazhi is close to heart month for all kolam lovers. On all days of Margazhi, not only young, all women take pride in drawing big kolams in front of their houses or apartments with Great Spirit. I am one among them.

Starting this Margazhi the alarm in my mobile phone is reset to 5 AM from 5.30 AM. Today as usual took bath, kept cooker, made pooja room ready, had coffee and I was all set to draw a bigger kolam than on other days before. Only while I was sprinkling water to do away the previous day’s kolam, I decided on a kolam which was a manipulation of a simple small kambi / chikku (drawn with curved lines, which don’t leave any ends open) kolam.

As mine is an independent house there is no space constraint like in apartments. Started with four dots, added four more dots in every third line. After completion of five or six lines, kept the dots on the left side alone as the centre lines needed more stretching of my hand. Then I completed the right side. I observed the dots were not in straight line. At this point of time, my wandering mind was slowly getting focused in the process, brain trying to establish connection between life and kolam. While doing the designs with curved lines, somewhere I got confused as I drew a curve in wrong direction, had to wipe out three rows to re-do. While drawing lines on the right side I observed that I had missed a dot in each line from a particular line. My brain was getting busier. Identifying the start of mistake took some time. Correcting that, I felt laborious. A lady who passed, stood there, stared for some time, told me to add few more dots, so that I can correct it. After I did it she commented, the dots I kept was totally wrong. As I was taking unusually long time my hubby came out and saw me struggling, “why are you straining yourself. Why shouldn’t you have chosen to draw a simple one?” Then came my son, added his suggestion “Just wipe out whole thing, make a new smaller one. I have to leave in ten minutes, hope you packed my breakfast and lunch”. At this juncture I could not ask my mother to help me as she was undergoing treatment and physiotherapy for her backache. Somehow I was able to finish it, went in completed all other routines. While waiting for school van to send off my daughter I was dismayed to see my kolam didn’t have its symmetry, which is basic essentiality of it. For a quick glance it was deceptive, but not for the eyes of inquisitive. Sure enough it has given me the message of life. Now, here I am sharing with you all.

As mine is an independent house there is no space constraint like in apartments

    – My kolam can ramble in any direction as there is no constraint, but it should follow certain pattern, should not have any open ends, with no boundaries set I cannot go beyond limits.
Life sets no boundary to us, we can take any path, but we should know our limits, good or bad, should not leave any open ends to let the unwanted, unlikeable things to creep in.

Started with four dots, added four more dots in every third line

    – In life too we should be able to take up additional responsibilities in accordance with our age. Pampered daughter at certain stage becomes a lovely wife with additional roles of responsible daughter-in-law, caring mother and in course of time she assumes the roles of respectable mother-in-law and adorable grandmother.

After completion of five or six lines, kept the dots on the left side alone as the centre lines needed more stretching of my hand. Then I completed the right side. I observed the dots were not in straight line

    – In life too our responsibilities keep increasing and we have to stretch ourselves, work hard in our middle ages to avoid any future disasters like how the dots of my kolam looked finally.

At this point of time, my wandering mind was slowly getting focused in the process

    – Focus is more important throughout the life. Planning is a pre-requisite to venture something big.

Correcting that, I felt laborious

    – Life too takes twists and turns like curved lines but one step in wrong direction, needs number of valuable years to undo and start all over again. One opportunity we miss like I missed one dot, getting it again is a laborious task. Correcting it becomes cumbersome. Sometimes we will be able identify where we went wrong, sometimes not. Better to choose a right path in the beginning itself.

    – When our life is in trouble, there may or may not be any persons who could help us. We may come across persons who will give wrong guidance, commenting rudely and talking at our back. Definitely we are prone to more comments of discouragement like “I already told you”, “Why did you venture this?” We are sure to get more suggestions good or bad, feasible or not feasible. Circumstances may hinder the persons who would like to help us.

Somehow I was able to finish it, went in and completed all other routines. While waiting for school van to send off my daughter I was dismayed to see my kolam didn’t have its symmetry, which is basic essentiality of it.

    – During the pressure we may not be able to identify the mistake, our ego may not accept the fact that we went wrong but when we think about the happenings, after simple diversion for our soul and body, we will be able to arrive at solution. But if we let the time lapse our life will end up like my kolam non-symmetrical.

Symmetry also reveals, to both men and women how both side relatives are to be treated equally as their own. Also indicates how a task to be analysed for its pros and cons.

For a quick glance it was deceptive, but not for the eyes of inquisitive.

    – The mistakes of our life though corrected by us would leave a scar of those. The scar could not be seen by a passer-by, but we know the scar exists and that will ever remind us of our deeds. We are never away from the vision of God.

Sure enough it has given me the message of life. Now, here I am sharing with you all.
