Ragging ...... is out of college campuses these days.....

But...., around 20 years ago.........Ragging was "in"......in the campuses.......
at least in my college campus......

Tried to re-collect the ragging journey.......

Once I found my number in the selection list of the prestigious institution, I started day dreaming.......

All ragging scenes from our movies .....Tamil and Hindi came to my mind.....and an uncomfortable feeling crept in......:hide:

I reluctantly asked my cousins.......they added fuel to the fire.....by sharing their ragging stories......

"You would be asked to smoke..."
"You would be asked to propose..."
    This.......That.........
    I was......:spin

The D - day came...........was in the college for admission....
    Large campus...........Huge buildings.........
    Hustle and bustle......
Orientation.....Verification of Certificates........Admission......every thing went on very smoothly......Me wearing a new dress and head high with pride......
    :queen

Then went back home.....to return after two days for the classes......
    I am a college- student....Yehhhh....!!!!!:banana
    I spent the week-end shopping trendy clothes and shoes.....and got a make-over.....

First day.....We had a formal "Fresher's party" at college....every one seemed to be friendly and helpful......
    :)

That night at hostel......My first encounter with ragging........

"What is your cut-off? How is your handwriting?"....asked a grim faced senior.....I proudly replied.....and.....I was handed bunches and bunches of assignment sheets......was awake the whole night......finished the assignments of 2nd and 3rd year seniors.......Witsend

Next morning......I stepped out in my new salwar-kameez......"Hey wait!!! tsk" called out a senior.....teased me....and ordered me to say " Hail mighty senior....I am your silly junior...." and I was ordered to wear only mix n match salwars and kurtas..........( mix n match was not "in" then....I had to wear a salwar from a suit and another kurta in contrast color...)

Some how, I reached college.......There......the news about my "prompt delivery " of assignments had already spread like wild-fire......I had loads of assignments to do that night.....
    :bonk

    Then, the funny episodes........
    Harhar

I was handed an ant.....and I should facilitate it to cross the busy road........Poor ant...and poor me.......it lost it's life........I had to do a "decent burial" for it........

Our class guys would be made to stand in a row......we girls should throw hats on their heads.......if not, we had to buy "coke" for our mighty seniors....

Had to talk old romantic tamil film dialogues to them.....

Had to regularly do the hailing part.....

    Had to sing....

    Had to dance.......the seniors regretted......

Had to stop a car and ask for a lift to "London"....

Had to answer technical questions and spell difficult words.....

    Had to mimicry Professors....

Had to play post- men between the guys' hostel and girl's hostel and bear the consequences....

We bore everything patiently........and later we became good friends too...with our seniors...........

Time rolled........was an active college student.......busy in college clubs and music troops.....

And......next year came........we were all eagerly waiting for our turn........we had our 2nd year admission a few days before the 1st years......Flash....came a sheet of paper when we went for enrollment........."An Undertaking by students and parents........It is to inform that ragging is strictly banned in and out of the campus and any student found involved in ragging would be expelled from college....."......We all were.......

P.S: I do not advocate harsh and un-cultured behaviour in the name of ragging......
But, I would not deny that, I enjoyed the mild , friendly ragging then.....

How about you friends.........Have you been ragged........Have you ever ragged......?!?!

    Hi Bhargavi,

The college I went to was very tame. There was an unwritten law that boys and girls never mingled and if they did talk, there were peons lingering around to keep a watch!!!!! :spin :drown :crazy

Yes, some harmless ragging can be entertaining. Unfortunately the form it has taken today has driven many youngsters to the brink of losing their minds if not their lives.

    bhargavi,
nice to know your ragging experiences..so u ended up doing so many assignments!! i will narrate mine:
one senior asked me to give my lunch box..which i gave..it was cauliflower subzi.mom had made it very spicy.he told me to bring chicken the next day with the same spiciness..but then my mom doesnt make non veg..
there was one 4th yr senior ragging me in one building when another guy of our class came and asked me my native place and name..this guy was sent by a 3rd yr guy as a part of his ragging..
few made me sing..then comes the intro and SD(self dabba or self boasting) part which had so many weird questions in between..
guys from different groups saying that if any guy from that group rags come and inform me and all..
i dint have any ragging from girls..i wasnt in hostel so may be..but all my classmates from hostel were ragged in college by boys and in hostel by girls..
finally after the freshers day there was no ragging atleast with me..towards the end of 1st yr we got to hear many horror ragging stories from our university college and so when we became seniors there were fines, suspensions and anti-ragging squad and also police roaming in our college. so no ragging in college and my hostel friends did ragging to our juniors in the hostel..see they had a chance and i never had that.

I loved the Mild ragging in my PG. (No ragging in UG). It was to speak cine dialogues...Sing Song...dance...and apart from it few ragging sessions in the hostel too...It never hurted anyone(Physically and Emotionally) but gave us good memories to be carried forward :)

mild ragging is the best way to get an easy intro to all seniors..
a boy in my class had to propose to me and then they got us married around set squares and T scales.... after this all the seniors knew me as a newly married bride!!!... and were always there to help..
by the way that boy and my very good friend are now married and its such a common joke between us.. that she married my ex!!!..
but ragging in the nasty way which affects the mental stability & humiliates the fresher should be banned

    Dear Knbg
Nice post on ragging. Unfortunately I did not experience this from the seniors, as mine was a group of 14 girls real rowdy you can say all of us.
Our entry into the college was such that the boys or even the seniors had to just tuck they tails and walk away. it was like we freshers ragging the seniors. But later all this was stopped.
During our entry time one of the seniors was actually angry on us and he went and ragged a very mild girl who couldn't take this jokingly and that girl sucided herself.
This was no serious ragging she was just asked to go and sit with another senior guy for the whole day. And we were all present there.
But now I am happy this ragging is completely removed from all the colleges, yes it do happens sometimes in the hostels. Now a days ragging has severe punishment. The person who rags his/her junior is jailed for a year.
