    I need a new handbag.

I am a tad reluctant to start shopping for one though. Oh I love shopping and buying myself new stuff. But when it comes to handbag I always put it off as long as possible.

There always develops a special kind of relationship between me and my handbags that every time I am forced to throw away the one currently-in-use, it feels like prying a part of me apart. It’s akin to bidding farewell to your best friend forever! The pain I undergo every time I do this is indescribable.

Over the years my handbag use has been elevated to an art that, when buying one, I now have it down to a science. :)

Once upon a time as a sprightly young teenager, all that mattered in a handbag was how attractive it looked. Functionality was a bad word for me! Why bother my pretty head :hide:about mundane stuff when all I carried were minimum cash, a handkerchief, and a small compact to powder my nose!
Later, marriage added one more item - the house key! How symbolic! :biggrin2:

When along with the titles of “wife and homemaker” came the responsibility of buying vegetables from the market my first condition in a handbag was set. To free both my hands to carry stuff, the bag should have a shoulder strap!

With the addition of children another compartment was required in my handbags to house a small spoon, safety pins, tissues, band-aid, crayons, a small scribble pad, a toy, etc. My powder compact became even more compact.

Moving to the US of A, it became imperative that the handbags came with a third compartment for my car keys, credit cards, checkbook, and driver’s license. My subsequent bags had additional pockets for my work id, a cell phone, a mini umbrella…..

Once I bought a bag I thought was perfect; I had overlooked one important feature. It had only a single button flap for closure. During my frequent screeching halts for those naughty squirrels darting in front of my car, many a times this handbag had toppled over spilling all the contents. Never again a handbag without a zipper, I vowed.

Every time I shop for that perfect handbag that befits me, err…my stipulations....
    · First the bag must be the right size. Neither too big, nor too small; just right – yup, Goldilocks
    · Next, the appearance: it definitely has to be attractive – to me.
    · Third, it should have shoulder straps – adjustable the better.
    · It should have a minimum of three compartments.
    · It should also have a plethora of pockets all around the sides.
    · There must be a zipper for closure.
    · And above all the price tag should not leave a hole in my bank account!
....it takes me so long visiting a multitude of stores, and losing my self in amazon (.com), every time I am sure the planets would align before I can find it.

    Well…
Now I am again reluctant to let my current handbag go. It is perfect.
    - It has two regular compartments and
    - A third big cavern that holds all my paraphernalia and then some!
    - In addition to pockets for my cell phone, foldable umbrella, and dark glasses,
    - It has pockets for my “oh-so-necessary” items – mints, rubber bands, Chap Stick, paper clips, mini stapler, stamps,....:spin
    - It has an adjustable shoulder strap
    - And can be fully zippered.
    - I love the color too …steel grey… subdued sophistication I call it!;-)
    - And above all this bag also hugs my hips snugly that I don’t look lumpy …hehe, vanity thy name is kkrish!

    Price tag you ask? :shhh::shhh:!!!!

One day last week, searching for some change I couldn’t find any. Very sure I had heard some clinking I tried again. There, beneath the cheque book, that was beneath the credit card wallet, that was beneath my cash purse, beneath the appointment book, beneath the handy-dandy notebook…..I found a hole in the lining. After much wriggling I pulled out the errant coins, at least two handfuls! No wonder my bag was feeling heavy lately. How nice to lose weight this way. Hmmm, sigh, sigh, lucky bag!

Last weekend placing my handbag in the airport security scanner I spotted a safety pin sticking out from a tiny hole in the bottom.

Decision made – I am off to shop for my bag’s clone before this hole gapes open, leaving coins in my trail like Hansel and Gretel’s bread crumbs.

    :waveBye!

    Dear Kamala,

Yessss. you do need a new handbag.do go and get yourself a trendy one..mri was telling me the other day that lancel is her dream brand.I know very little of these things now:)

Next time I go to buy myself one I am gonna take this for reference as i am usually an impulsive buyer and come home to find that it has only two pockets.???

Anyway not being a working woman now I have also lost the fun in shopping (the family may not agree on this ) For accessories.

I loved the way the size of your bag has increased over the years...hahaha.good one :thumbsup

    Hello Kamala
That was a wonderful write up on your handbag:)
Ooops...never imagined you could write such a good article on your hand bag.:biggrin2: It is so true as days pass by we need to have so many compartments never gave a thought on this. The things go on adding into your bag.
Enjoyed reading about your handbag and how it reduced your weight:)

    My dear Kamala
I now ask myself, 'Cheeniya, do you think you can write an FB to this? Is this something up your alley? Do you really want to make an ass of yourself? Your exposure to hand bags is limited to the jute bags that you carry to vegetable and provision stores. What do you know about ladies' hand bags? You don't even know that there is no space between hand and bag when it comes to ladies' hand bags! It is not necessary that you should poke your nose into every subject that is discussed in Snippets irrespective of the fact that you know nothing about them. Quit, Cheeniya unless you want to ridicule yourself' and I reply in a feeble voice 'But it is Kamala's thread! How can I overlook it?' The exasperated other Cheeniya says 'If you want to dig your own grave, go ahead! Here are the pick and axe! Enjoy yourself!'

Kamala, having been thus warned, everyone would expect me to walk out but I can't! I have never resisted the temptation to write an FB to you. As Oscar Wilde said, the best way to resist temptation is to yield to it and here I am yielding to it. This thread reminds me of Mr.Bean. In this episode, we see him relaxing in a park bench and all set for making himself a fish sandwich. As his fellow park-bencher unpacks his sandwich and starts munching it, Bean starts pulling out a hundred ingredients from his coat pocket to make himself a sandwich. He even takes out a bottle of water with a live fish in it which he puts to instant death by smashing it on the wall. I have always wondered why a ladies' hand bag should have so many compartments but then haven't we heard that necessity is the mother of invention? Maybe ladies need all these compartments plus one going by the n+1 theory!

Oh, I never realized the importance and implication of handbag and it various uses till today.
After I read this assumption and analysis wil remember you whenever I see any handbag in a shop and will try my level best not to stare at women carrying big shoulder bags.

Dear Kamala mam... You spoke for every woman here! The conditions that a handbag has to pass before getting a place in our hand is endless. It should be big enough to hold our items, but not to big to catch everyones eyes; It should be good looking, but not so attractive to catch the thieves eyes; It must have many compartments, but not so many such that you have to open a zillion zips to find a quarter coin; It must be made of quality material, but shouldn't eat all our money... And as Cheeniya Sir mentioned, it should be a handbag, but have some space between hand and the bag, but not as much as Jolna pai.. [Sorry don't know the English equivalent].

I don't own a handbag myself.. Though the handbag is hanging from the shoulder, I have to hold it with a hand always, which is so uncomfortable [my shoulder design is like that.. ]. I always carry a backpack, where I can put my lunch box, fruits, note books, tickets, purse, ID card, keys everything, but still have both my hands free... :)

I see women spending a fortune for handbags for their brand names, which is so small to hold even the key. Then they carry all the books in the hand... Why, I wonder..

Nice writeup Kamala mam... Yes please keep emptying the coins often, else you would have your own dumbell without your knowledge... :)

    Thanks much Mindi
How I wish...but I find that the more trendy the bag the less functional it is. Perhaps when I am retired and a day comes when all I need to carry are miinimum cash, hanky, and a powder compact, then may be, m..a..y..b..e :)

    Hahaha..sure, go ahead!

:) True..I too hope the size stops with this; any bigger and it will be called a suitcase :)

    Thanks for the lovely feedback!
BTW: I love your daughter in your avatar.

Hahaha. Kamala, I remember the trouble I have had with suitable bags. Never have I been able to go to school, college or to work without a huge bag crammed with books, pens, purse, lunch box ....... I have tried to, but it has always been mission impossible. So as you can guess a handbag is grossly inadequate for me. Have always taken huge sacks which give way nonetheless. I could not sort out this problem, so I chose the next best option - sit at home. So now I have liberated myself of the need of handbags, bags or sacks. :-D
