Health is wealth”- Most common quote known to all of us.

Being healthy make us feel more confident, turning us bold enough to face the challenges of our daily lives.

Being healthy is not a mere absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.

Our present lives have become so hectic & busy exposing us to lots of stress and leaving us worn out by the end of the day.

We claim to be health cautious but how many of us are leading a real healthy lifestyle?

How many of us do really feel that exercise is a must to be fit rather than only to lose weight?

How many of us are really enjoying a healthy diet without any excuses?

Oops…… am I boring you with my bigggggg lecture!

Hmmm…. but I am really here to motivate others& get motivated myself leading towards a healthy lifestyle.

I wanted to keep a full stop to the notion, ‘exercise/healthy diet (vegetable & fruit rich) is only for the people who are obese/diseased’.

These days my full energy is concentrated towards inculcating healthy eating habits & introducing daily exercise to my family including kids.

I welcome whoever is going to join me in this journey towards healthy lifestyle.

I will be coming up with the changes in my journey towards healthy lifestyle in the next post.

    Regards,
    Latha.

    Hi all,

I have made slight changes in my family diet and made a regular habit of including exercise as a daily activity.

I am preparing chocolates, biscuits, cakes, pizzas, etc. for my kids at home itself as to avoid the quantity of butter/cheese/sugar/preservatives as much as possible.

I have substituted normal flour with wholemeal/wholegrain flour; white bread to wholemeal/wholegrain bread.

Mostly I use very less sugar in sweets & puddings and that too brown sugar.

I have reduced deep frying mostly.

Outside eating has been restricted to once a month.

Included lots of veggies & fruits in our diet. Whatever breakfast I prepare, I make sure that veggies will be included in it as much as possible. I have included fruits in snacks, lunch & dinner for all of us.

I have decreased the quantity of oil usage in curries. Mostly I use olive oil and for deep frying I use sunflower/canola oil.

Slow & steady always wins the race. Hence I have brought all these changes slowly and want to bring some more if possible by educating my family and make it a permanent change in the long run.

I want to hear if anyone wants to join me in the healthy lifestyle challenge by doing slight changes in their lifestyle as much as possible.

    Regards,
    Latha.

Hi Vchelluri, a very good start towards healthy life.[IMG] I welcome this thread and join you.

I have started only salad dinner. I have sliced beetroot, carrot, cucumber and sometimes tomatoes. I make it a point that i have beetroot and carrot daily in the night. Not only i get a full feeling but also helps me regulating the bowel movements. I feel amazing changes overall because of this salad dinner.

As you said, exercising is not only for weightloss but for a overall felxibility of the body, building stamina and for a healthy life.

Motivation is an important factor and don't worry, i am also sailing in the same boat. So we are there for each other to motivate and proceed further towards a healthy life. Hope other bees will soon get trapped into this health web.

    Keep sharing your lifestyle changes.

    Hi Mira,
Great to hear that you are in this challenge.
And that's a great change including salad in your regular diet. My kids love carrots a lot and so I make sure they will be available at home all days.

I will definitely update my changes further if any and expect the same from you.

Am eagerly waiting to see how many of them are going take up this challenge.

My whole intension to get motivated & motivate others through this thread and make the changes permanent rather than dumping them after a while due to lack of motivation.

    Regards,
    Latha.

    Few changes i have made:
1)Using the stairs for my office in fourth floor: If i couldn't climb upto entire fourth floor i take lift from second or third floor. While climbing down , i always use stairs
2)Taking atleast one fruit with my breakfast. As my breakfast in generally Cornflakes fruits gives a good flavor along
3)Reducing the rice content: Eating rice only twice in a week.

Well, my hubby and I have also joined the Healthy Lifestyle Challenge! thanks to his high sugar level and my high LDL. Ive posted our plan in http://www.indusladies.com/forums/healthy-food-and-living/152553-fruits-common-foods-avoid-border.html

Wonder why people, usually from non rice eating states, consider rice to be bad. The southern, eastern and north eastern states people consume huge quantities of rice, is there any study to show that they are more prone to heart/brain/diabetic ailments than those from traditionally wheat consuming states?

I don't think rice is considered as bad. It is very difficult to change the eating habit & preferences which one is used to right from one's childhood days. For those who are used to rice they may find eating daily chapathis or other wheat products difficult as they prefer rice which they are used to and it is vice versa with non rice eating people too. Rice has more carbs and wheat more fibre. moreover, every food item grows (by nature) based on the climatic conditions of that particular region and that suits their health taking this weather condition into account. Regarding diabetes i have heard a doctor saying that wheat eating people are prescribed to eat rice than wheat and it is vice versa to rice eating people and this concept works on the psychology that those who eat wheat will not prefer rice much thus their quantity intake reduces and vice versa it works the same way with rice eaters too. Habit of eating sweets is more common with the people in northern part.

    ok now [IMG].

I have reduced the quantity of my morning breakfast and included fruits which i eat at intervals with plenty of hot water in between.

Welcome to our healthy lifestyle challenge Geetha.:cheers

Yes. Whatever Mira said is absolutely correct as doctors recommend rice eating people to shift to wheat and vice versa in order to reduce the calorie content. Otherwise there is no much difference for both of them in calories/carbs. Only thing is rice will be losing it's fibre content due to high polishing (ofcourse we find it in brown rice) and wheat flour contains fibre (in homemade flour only not in store bought).

Hey guys, I want to make one point clear. This healthy lifestyle challenge is not regarding abstaining from certain foods and dieting.
My main aim is to add some healthy stuff to our regular normal diet enjoying the food without any guilt.
I won't avoid rice at all nor I skip my breakfast nor I substitute it for anything.
I simply enjoy my breakfast heartfully daily. It may be Idlis, dosas, upma, etc. but I will make sure that I will add so many veggies to them while preparing and I make sure that I won't exceed my limit of eating.
I will have limited amount (not small) of rice for the lunch with more curries and curd.
    I will enjoy coffee/tea almost 4 - 5 days a week.
My dinner will be idli/dosa/upma/oats,etc bcos I feel light instead of rice.
I will be having fruits for breakfast, evening snacks and dinner.
Every now and then I enjoy sweets too but I will add more fruits in sweets wherever possible and if not possible in some sweets I enjoy as it is. But the sweets are only home made with less sugar and very less butter.
But if happens for me to eat a bit more quantity of sweet/deep fried item, I will make sure that I will have a bit more exercise on that day.
Here in Australia it is recommended that it's better to choose products consisting of heart foundation tick which are healthy. Almost 95% of the products I buy from the supermarket will be containing heart foundation tick.
I even substituted butter for olive spread. In cakes also I use olive spread instead of butter.
I used to prepare non-veg too in combination with vegetables. But ofcourse since 1 month or so we have stopped bringing non-veg to home as all of us have become reluctant/bored but now and then we will be enjoying fried chicken items outside.

I have totally increased the overall usage of veggies and fruits in our family diet and decreased the harmful contents in the diet as much as possible but I didn't restricted the breakfast/lunch/dinner in particular and by doing so we don't feel like missing anything or feel like unable to enjoy life.

Hope you got my point well.

    Regards,
    Latha.
