    WOW sunkan ma'am...

this is definitely an interesting topic here.
1stly i must say that i am part of the 'unpierced' gang. but only for a short while i hope, because much to my parents dismay, i actually want to get my nose pierced.coming from malaysia, only certain traditions are practiced. and unlike the nose piercing, it is no longer a must for the girls. only some families (those i presume have closer ties to india) still uphold this practice. nowadays most teenage girls do want to get piercings and they are not afraid of withstanding the pain. it is the parents who are against this.shakehead
    *sigh*

    take care
    regards

    Dear Sunkan,

Once again a great observation from you about the mookuthi! Yes, I know that song and the movie too which was so good.
It was fascinating to know that so many women are for piercing the nose today. Even in countries outside India, piercing is a Big deal, all of us know.
My mom too had both sides of her nose pierced and was wearing the mookuthi and besthri. As a matter of fact, I always thought that MSS looked so much like my mom:) Big pottu, nose rings and poo in the hair! It is so sad that our women have to give up on the way they dress after the husband's demise.
As for me and my sis, oh no, we never even remotely thought about piercing our nose(s)!! Even the thought of it brings tears to my eyes! Luckily, my daughters too did not entertain such thoughts, which they could easily have as it is such an in-thing today!!

    L, Kamla

    happy kamla,
you came by and dropped a few lines here, otherwise the decorum was missing something as it is about woman and their adornment, the piercing should be done when all things are tender, sorry to say but if i decide today to go and get done i know i am letting myself more pain than necessary, but if my madness drives, you think we woman will back out on pain never...sunkan

    Dear Sunkan and others

Unfortunately I don't understand the tamil words but this is a very interesting topic. I am from South Africa so to understand from where I'm coming from in terms of the indian community check my post in Indians in Africa- Who's my relative? SA Indian. It seems that wearing a nose ring is a tradition practised for ages even if there's no religious authority to verify this. I remember both my great grannies wearing mukuthi and also many naanies used to wear naath. But slowly the tradition died off. It came back in fashion not by traditionalists but by the "piercing craze" that swept through a while back.

Almost 2 years back a mum and daughter Navi and Sonali Pillay challenged the courts when her daughter's school refused to allow her to wear a nose ring. The case was lost first but the mum took it further to the Constitutional court when this year she won, and the judge said that people should not be disriminated against because of their religious/ cultural background. Funny enough "learned hindu scholars" in South Africa could not give support to her case since they felt that it was of no religious significance. Even the Indian public in general weren't too vocal about it because it's not a tradition that we know too much about or practice. Then there was debate that if she chose to go to that school then she should abide by their rules.

Although I was disturbed by the intolerance of the school authorities I too wasn't too passionate of this matter until NOW. My daughter turned one and my mum said that for Mayuri's birthday the earings and piercing would be her present. Like many years ago when I was one, my granny took me to the jewellers and pierced my ears. Now if someone interferes with my daughters pierced ears I too would be upset though it traditional, cultural but not religious. In South Africa religious differences are to be respected but its a grey area about some cultural aspects.

Can people tell me if there is any religious significance or specific rituals that people do when piercing the nose or ears?

PS: I am married into a Govender family. While there is no such surname in India they are from the Gounder/ Gounda community - it would be interesting to know some of their traditions.

    Regards Neesha
