    Hi,

I have seen that it is alwasys suggested to eat soaked badam and figs early in the morning. I most of the time forget to soak in the night and end up eating dry in the morning. What are the extra advantages of eating them soaked compare to dry.

    Thanks,
    Sarayu

I guess its a stupid question. Nobody wants to answer. Never mind...

I was just curious to know the actual reason behind soaking and eating figs and badam.

i browsed the following stuff in net 4 u...may b of some use:

Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water # 1: Almonds are difficult to digest because of an enzyme-inhibiting substance in their brown coating. These enzyme inhibitors protect the nut or seed until it has what it needs for to grow. Soaking almonds overnight removes these toxic enzyme inhibitors so that the enzymes secreted during digestion can do their job. Also the gluten breaks down, so the digestion becomes much easier. Phytic acid, which inhibits the absorption of vital minerals, is also reduced. This helps our body get the benefit of vitality contained within them. Moreover, soaking almonds in milk and eating them increases the libido and enhances general sexual performance in cases of frigidity.

Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water # 2: Soaked almonds health benefits include the one during the pregnancy period. Almonds are highly nutritive and hence a best source of energy for pregnant women. Soaking almonds in water or milk overnight, adding a pinch of saffron and making a paste will make a tasty preparation. Pregnant women must consume this preparation along with a healthy diet everyday for the best nourishment of both mother and baby.

Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water # 3: Almond is known as a brain tonic. It is rich in essential fats and serves to enhance memory and intelligence. This is one of the popular benefits of soaking almonds in water. Eating 4-6 soaked almonds every morning helps enhance your memory.

Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water # 4: Soaking almonds in water makes them softer. This means better digestibility, easy absorption and assimilation of the nutrition in the nut and it is also becomes easier to chew. You must chew nuts thoroughly because big chunks of unchewed nuts are hard on the digestive tract.

Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water # 5: Apart from various health benefits of almonds, they have beauty benefits as well. By soaking almonds in water you can form an effective moisturizer. Soak almonds in water overnight, boil them in the morning and blend with whipped cream. Your natural moisturizer is ready to give you a soft and supple skin.

Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water # 6: Almond face scrub can be easily made at home by soaking them overnight. Soak a few almonds in warm water overnight, peel and grind them to make a rough paste in the morning. Mix this paste with fresh cream and use it as a face scrub. This face scrub is perfect to exfoliate the dead skin cells and leave a soft skin. This scrub can also be used for rough knees and elbows.

    Soaking Almonds in Water: Procedure

While soaking almonds in water, you might be wondering how long to soak? Here is the procedure.
    • Take the required quantity of almonds.
    • Rinse them in purified or filtered water. The quantity of water should be double the quantity of almonds.
    • Place these almonds in a glass or stainless steel bowl.
    • Cover the bowl with a cloth or towel and not with a dish or lid.
    • Almonds must be soaked at room temperature.
    • Drain the water and rinse the nuts thoroughly after 8-10 hours
Soaking almonds in water is surely an easy step that can fit into your busy schedules. Remember, if you eat almonds first thing in the morning, they will set the hydrochloric acid tolerance for the day and provide all-day protein digestion. Almonds are efficiently digested when consumed in this way since stomach acids are concentrated after the night fast. When soaked, almonds act as as protein plus nitrogen. This protein will help your blood sugar stabilize throughout the day. When there are so many benefits of soaking almonds in water overnight, then why not spend a few minutes and get all the healthy benefits of almonds! <!-- From Benefits of Soaking Almonds in Water --><!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Thanks Shalini....There should be a better reason for soaking them. For badam probably to remove the skin and oil but I have absolutely no clue why figs are soaked.

This is the answer I got from googling your question..
    1. It seems the outer skin of almonds is hard to digest and therefore heat-producing. Nuts are easier to digest and their nutrients are more readily available if they are first soaked overnight Salt in the soaking water activates enzymes that neutralize enzyme inhibitors in the skin.

2--- Soaking almonds does not take away nutrients as they are with skin when soaked.

3---When almonds are the first thing in your stomach after arising, they set the hydrochloric acid tolerance for the day, providing all-day protein digestion. When almonds are eaten first, they are efficiently digested since stomach acids are concentrated after the nightly fast. (If you leave hydrochloric acid alone in your stomach, the saliva and hydrochloric acid would become toxic.) Presoak organic raw almonds in distilled water overnight for quick germinal action. When soaked, almonds act as protein plus nitrogen. This protein helps your blood sugar stabilize throughout the rest of the day. Eat one almond per ten pounds of bodyweight, more if you want to gain weight and less if you want to lose weight. Water soluble vitamins are vitamin C and B complex. Almonds have Riboflavin which is water soluble. But you can get riboflavin from spinach, dairy foods, eggs, broccoli which are better option for riboflavin than Almonds.

4--- Almonds exhibit an alkaline effect in the body. This means that alkaline rather than acidic substances are formed when Almonds are consumed. Soaking Almonds overnight before eating can further enhance the alkaline properties of this nut

But I have been eating almonds without removing the skin.
Almonds skins have some nutritional properties. Here is the information I have found:

Not only do apple seeds contain cyanogens, precursors to cyanide, but peach pits, almond skins, citrus fruits and some berries contain them as well. There are several varieties of this nut; the sweeter "soft shell" and the bitter "hard shell" Almond. Only the sweet variety is used for eating with the skin. Soaking some bitter ones removes the bitterness and make them edible.
