    Hi ladies,

My mother is 64 yrs old and she has been having bone problems. She was complaining of leg pain when upon diagnosis it was found that her L1 bone in the back is rubbing against and pressing one of her veins, causing the pain. She also has weak ribs. But, she is a super-active lady..yes, we know how our moms are :)..they want to do everything on their own, w/o thinking that they are no longer young :)...so no issues related to lack of exercise n all...also, she claims she drinks 2 glasses of milk

can you please tell me what foods she needs other than milk to increase her calcium intake? or any effective medicine? i m stressing the effective part because she has been taking some alopathy medicine, which i doubt is doing any good to her...any ayurvedic tips/food/medicine??

    thanks a ton!

    sahmaara,

has your mother gone for bmd that is bone mineral density tests. at 64, there is not much help in taking just calcium rich food.

get her screened by a good physician, and then go for a good treatment and therapy.

    Dear OP,
The way you have narrated, is it osteoporosis ? (I'm no doctor, but). The doc should be able to diagnose this with a couple of x-rays and bone density test. My Mom had it when she was 63-65. Her fingers were bent a little. It used to pain a lot and she was not able to hold utensils while cooking etc. With hormone replacement therapy and calcium supplement and related medications, she is perfectly alright in that front.

Please see a proper doc. It needs proper investigation and medication.

All the best. Hope your Mom be alright soon.

    Love

    hi,

i'm 53 and already have osteoporosis. so here are the remedies i use .. i hope it is useful.

i take calcium supplements AND have to spend an hour in the sun for Vitamin D supplement. I think those who live abroad might have tabs for this, but in chennai the morning sun is good and not too hot.

every evening, because i get leg pain, i use an ayurvedic oil called 'murivennai' which was recommended to my by my vaid (Dr. PLT Girija at Indira Nagar, Chennai). you have to warm the oil and pour it over the leg slowly ... I assure you it's very soothing. All this helps me. but i'd suggest others consult a vaid before deciding which ayurvedic medicine to choose.

    cheers
    Sandhya

    Hi
Peak bone density is reached at approximately 25 years of age. So it is important to build strong bones by that age, so that the bones will remain strong later in life.
    How does it occur?
Osteoporosis occurs when there is an imbalance between new bone formation and old bone resorption. The body may fail to form enough new bone, or too much old bone may be reabsorbed, or both. Two essential minerals for normal bone formation are calcium and phosphate. Throughout youth, the body uses these minerals to produce bones. Calcium is essential for proper functioning of the heart, brain, and other organs. To keep those critical organs functioning, the body reabsorbs calcium that is stored in the bones to maintain blood calcium levels. If calcium intake is not sufficient or if the body does not absorb enough calcium from the diet, bone production and bone tissue may suffer. Thus, the bones may become weaker, resulting in brittle and fragile bones that can break easily.
Usually, the loss of bone occurs over an extended period of years. Often, a person will sustain a fracture before becoming aware that the disease is present. By then, the disease may be in its advanced stages and damage may be serious.
The leading cause of osteoporosis is a lack of certain hormones, particularly estrogen in women and androgen in men. Women, especially those older than 60 years of age, are frequently diagnosed with the disease. Menopause is accompanied by lower estrogen levels and increases a woman's risk for osteoporosis. Other factors that may contribute to bone loss in this age group include inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, lack of weight-bearing exercise, and other age-related changes in endocrine functions (in addition to lack of estrogen).
Other conditions that may lead to osteoporosis include thyroid problems, lack of muscle use, bone cancer, certain genetic disorders, use of certain medications, and problems such as low calcium in the diet.

    Treatment:
Treatment for osteoporosis focuses on slowing down or stopping the mineral loss, increasing bone density, preventing bone fractures, and controlling the pain associated with the disease.
Diet: Young adults should be encouraged to achieve normal peak bone mass by getting enough calcium (1,000 mg daily) in their diet (drinking milk or calcium-fortified orange juice and eating foods high in calcium such as salmon), performing weight-bearing exercise such as walking or aerobics (swimming is aerobic but not weight-bearing), and maintaining normal body weight.
People who have spinal, hip, or wrist fractures should be referred to a bone specialist (called an orthopedic surgeon) for further management. In addition to fracture management, these people should also be referred to a physical and occupational therapist to learn ways to exercise safely. For example, someone with spinal fractures would avoid touching their toes, doing sit-ups, or lifting heavy weights. Many types of doctors treat osteoporosis, including internists, generalists, family physicians, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, and others.
Regular exercise can reduce the likelihood of bone fractures associated with osteoporosis
Please consult a doctor regarding the following. General recommendations:
Calcium and vitamin D are needed to increase bone mass.
A daily intake of 1,200-1,500 mg (through diet and supplements) is recommended. Take calcium supplements in doses of less than 600 mg. Your body can only absorb so much at one time. The best way may be to take one supplement with breakfast and another with dinner.
A daily intake of 800-1,000 IU of vitamin D is needed to increase bone mass.

Please do a google search on osteoporosis and its treatement. Plenty of material out there.

My mother has been suffering from osteoporosis for the past almost 20 years due to hysterctomy at an early age and thyroid treatment. We came to know of it only due to fracture in the spinal cord while going over a speed-breaker.
This has completely altered her life-style. She used to take HRT (harmone replacement therapy) but stopped within a year as its side-effects were pretty scary. In fact stopping itself caused some side effects which thankfully dissappeared after a while.
It is very important to take Calcium-rich food, medication given by doctor and exercise. Only these three will help reach a balance and slow the degeneration.

Hope this information will be useful. Dear sisters, please do take care of your health.
Best Wishes and a Healthy Happy New Year
