how long does it take for vicryl stitches to heal

I had a normal delivery with tear. The doc has put vicryl stitches in the tear. It has been a week now, but I am not sure if it has healed. Any ideas how long does it take for stitches to heal.

I am finding it difficult to sit and feed the baby at times due to slight pain in the stitches. However, doc has suggested that sitting, walking will not cause any harm to the stitches.

I am giving water bath to the area 3/4 times in a day. Let me know if I need to take some more precautions for the stitches.

Congrats on your baby's arrival..!! I too had first delivery normal with tear. It took more than 20 days to dissolve. Of course it will be painful while sitting and feeding. what i did was i used to wash that area
with warm water every time when i go for toilet. Also while feeding do keep a spongy pillow under your bucks wherever you sit and feed in chair (chair/bed). I used to sit in chair over a small smooth pillow and
i will keep another pillow in my lap and place the baby over it. with that i can adjust the height to feed him.

As your doctor said these sutures wont hurt. It will automatically fall down when you go for toilet.

Hi,
I had a 4th degree tear like couple of mons ago..it took like 2 mons to heal and 3 months for the perinium pain to go for me to walk or sit comfortably..I still encounter some muscle pulling.
what degree tear you had?
Regardless, sitz bath is good for healing. Also, make sure you keep your botton very clean, keep your bowels soft by adding lots of fibres.
Added, add protein and vit c in your diet. Proteim for tissue regeneration and vit c for healing.
Also, while sitting dont sit directly pn ur butt, squeeze to sit on side (more on ur hips) so your bottom doesnt get strained..

I am not sure about the degree of the tear. However, in my case as the stitching had to be done again the doc had used the material which is used for outer stitches with Vicryl (vicryl helps in dissolving outer stiches). The stitches have not dissolved yet, its been 10 days. The doc has said that further checkup is not needed, the stitches would heal and there is no need to get them cut.

If the stitches dissolve it is offcourse fine, but if they do not dissolve then will it be of any harm in the long run?

Hi,

I had a 4th degree tear it took 3 months to heal and it is very painful when I sit, walk and feed.. I am using pillow when i sit and feed.

Just sitdown in tub fill with hotwater along with one drop of Dettol for two times a day (Morning and evening). I follow this way and my striches falls and the wound is healed...

Still I have the pain in perinium due to this tear:bonk.

I have itching sensation in and around the stitches at times. Is it normal to have such a sensation?

Hi,
itchng means things r healing.
abt ur other question...yes, stiches will fall on its own once the area heals. Our body worls nicely to get rid of foreign substances such as unabsorable stiches. If not, when u back to ur doc for postpartum check, she willl be able to snip off extra hanging ones if she thinks the area has healed. But if u see pieces of stiches falling on its own, dont worry as long as there is no blood or great pain from the tear area..it means things have healed n extra ends r falling off..

I agree with Ottawagirl, stiches are healing, and always keep your bowels soft by adding lots of fibres in your diet.

Prabhu09, I am currently having a papaya a day for keeping bowel movements soft. However, does it mean that now I have to keep the bowel movements soft for entire life span? or for some specified duration?

Also I am currently using Western toilet but in about 15 days I have to visit one of my relatives, and they have only Indian toilet in their house. Will it be fine if I use Indian toilet then? Or will it cause any harm to the stitches if I spread my legs?
