    Hello,

I urgently need some advice on a tricky situation. I started my Santoshi Maa's vrats 2 weeks back. This coming Friday would be the 3rd Vrat.

Please help me figure out what I can do about this situation!!

I have to go to a matrimonial event for singles on Friday from 9 pm - 2 am(in USA). At that event, they have a bar but its not where people will be getting drunk(casual drinking) but of course alcohol is alcohol no matter what. I will not be touching or drinking anything except water. Is it okay to go to a place like that?

My 1st thought was no, I should not go. But then someone pointed out that as long as you do not touch or drink or eat, its okay. The e.g. is if I am working in my office bldg. co-workers could be eating non-veg or sour food in my area but I'm not touching or eating it. Does that make sense?:)

Please give me your advice as soon as possible, I will greatly appreciate it..

    Thank you so much... Raadhika

    Hi,

I am also planning to do the Santoshi maa vrat from this friday. Can anyone post the procedure..i am confused whether to put a kalasham or not like we do in varalakshmi vratam. The procedure online says that i have to put one small vessel with grams and jaggery on top of the kalash. I am confused on how to do that...can anyone please help me out here.

    thanks

Dear saroja, even I am planning to start my Vrat from this friday. My mom and most of my maternal aunts are long time devotees of Santhoshi Ma. I've done this before and my sisters do it quite often. I have been planning to do this again for a long time and recently it is like I've been getting divine hints..

Last friday, I turned on the TV and it was a movie on Santhoshi Ma. There was some thing else..and now I opened this site and here this thread popped up in front of my eyes. I think...I am being hinted to do this.

I asked my mom this morning and according to her, these are good days to start the Vrat (The navrathris). This time I am planning to do it very strictly for 16 weeks.

Apart my best of the best favorite god, Venkatesha, I love Santhoshi Ma. It is her blessings that we are ..how we are now. Jai Santhoshi. I am sure you can find procedure at many places online. Good Luck. Hugs.

    Pavithra,

Thank you so much for responding. I was in so much debate but then another good thing happened, I got my monthly cycle, hence I will not be able to do the vrat puja this Friday.

Also, when I have monthly cycle & cannot do puja, how am I supposed to treat that Friday? In terms of eating, fasting, etc.? If you know that too please respond.

    Thanks again..

    take care.. Raadhika

Hello dear, Sorry for the late reply. I missed your question some how. But here is my observation.

I observed that each online procedure and each of us here do the pooja differently. The way I do, I put the coconut on the Kalash (I don't use the same coconut for the whole duration of the pooja for weeks and months like some online procedure said. I just use a new one every week.).

So, I put a Kalashi, tie the sacred thread around its neck. Put Betal leaves or Mango leaves around the mouth - supported by the coconut in the middle. The water filled Kalash with all the decorations represents to me the Goddess (The coconut- her head decorated with flowers, leaves, kumkum and Haldi, the Kalash with Water - Her womb containing the sacred rivers).

I have the Fruits (usually Banana) and 'Chana and Jaggary' in a different small bowl. The rest is the usual flowers, Arthi Thali, Incense sticks, Diyas, Coins and Most important Santhoshi Ma Vrath Book.

Friday mornings, after the house is spic and span, the beds made, dishes all clean etc (No unclean spots of bad energy in the house), the front door step is cleaned and decorated with Rangoli. I try to keep the front door open or at least the back door if it is not too cold, during the pooja. That lets the Laxmi (Good energy) in. The purpose of all this, is to purify the environment around us and make us more relaxed, happy and feel light in our hearts. It also helps in my weekly house chore schedule, so best in both ways :)

I sit on a mat in front of Santhoshi Ma picture (It is advisable to clean all the pooja Samagri before every pooja) and put the Kalash like mentioned above on a little rice. I keep a separate glass of water with a flower from my own backyard for 'Achamanam' etc - sprinkling water (ceremonial giving bath and drinking water to the goddess).

I usually go through the Vrath Book, but before doing any pooja, I sit and think about my Sankalp. A Sankalp is a purpose - a purpose why you are doing this pooja. What is that you want so badly that you are asking the god to help you out? All the years before, I prayed god like "Lord, keep everyone around me Safe, Happy and Healthy and give me, what I deserve". Do you see how ineffective and purposeless that was!!

A Sankalp should be some thing what YOU really want. The God and the pooja, may be real or may not be, but when you think of a Sankalp in your mind and tie the sacred thread to your wrist, you will be constantly reminded of your Sankalp and help you work on your Sankalp more devotedly. Your Sankalp should not be vague as my previous one. Your Sankalp should be precise, clear and defined. Some thing that you are committing to the Goddess and promising her that you will work on it to make it possible and asking her help in making your Sankalp happen. I hope you are getting what I want to say.

I go through the Varth Book..from invoking the Goddess, to inviting her, seating her, washing her feet, giving her bath, clothes, flowers, jewelry etc. Then comes the Dheep, Dhoop etc. Then come the Niveyadhyam (the chana jaggery or Sugar+moong dal etc) part.
Above is all ritualistic, but these physical doing of rituals make our mind to concentrate on our Sankalp more.

After that, I take some Akshatha in hand and read the whole Vrath Katha. Reading the same old katha may become routine, but the purpose here is to acknowledge the Goddess' Power and Grace and our need to be trust in her.

After the Katha, I put those Akshatha at Devi's feet and put them on my head and some on my kid. I break the coconut on the Kalash (Some say not to do it absolutely, but suggest putting it in Havan..some where). I don't like to waste food, so I break the coconut and use the water as Theerth. I cut the coconut in pieces and mix it up with Bananas and Sugar and it makes a yummy prasad that all the family can eat the whole day.

After breaking the coconut, I give arthi to the Goddess with any beautiful songs available.

I fast until evening and light the diyas once again in the evening and read the short version of the Katha and take Prasad. I make either some tiffin like upma/roti with aloo/beans/cauliflower curries or sometimes I take a cup of rice with plain dal and any of the above curry. I try to eat something light (Called Mitha-Aharam), rather then stuffing myself.

That is all there is to Santhoshi Mata Vrat. I feel happy, content and energized doing this. You may or may not be doing all these or may do things differently etc, but no matter what you do, it is all with how much 'Shradhha' do you do it and how much you trust yourself and your Goddess.

Good Luck and May God give you all that you ask her with a true heart. Jai Santhoshi.
