We have all kind of customs, rituals and taboos. But we never get explanations form elders. My late well educated mother in law explained to me few things about the taboos especially during the periods activities. we did not have pads kind of things to product us form the over flow etc. Women need rest and only time they used to get it that time. Since they lived in a large family, women had a lots of responsibilities. If your analyze it well, we have good systems. Since we did not get explanations, we all get upset why should we do it?

I think it is up to you if we should attend Puja or temple. God does not discriminate!!!

    Good day.:coffee

"Why we should not go to temples or any god during periods? whats wrong in it. Of course many elders say but why is it so...what's wrong in it?"

What follows is my personal opinion. It is not to raise the hackles of any one. Each is welcome to own opinion. There is really no right or wrong in these matters.

This is a normal biological function of the female of every mammalian species. This is a necessary part of ovulation essential for child bearing. We have been designed that way by God or Whatever you may want to call It.
How can God have any objection to a bhakthai wanting to worship?

I have no confirmation of this story. I know that the opposite has been written here itself. Apparently when asked about this issue Kanchi Paramacharyal is supposed to have said, " Is not Devi a woman? There is no harm if one goes to a temple. Let the person have a bath and go.'

Some of the isolation customs evolved from imperfect knowledge of physiology. With modern hygenic practices many of these are irrelevant.

Interaction with the Infinite is strictly between individual and God. No one else has a say in that. So long as one does not feel uncomfortable or guilty, it is alright.

I shall go even further. There is something wrong if others try to make you feel guilty.

    Hi,
We are psychologically tuned by our elders not to temples or not to do any pooja's and i heard that we are suppose to give rest to our uterus, no weight bearing, heavy work or strenuous exercises. Just think even after having 10 or 15 babies also over great great grandparents are healthy. Compare us with them after having one or two we are weak, we are having back pain and many more, by giving rest for three days they are giving rest to the ladies physically and mentally. I also read that if you meditate during this 3 days it will be effective and this 3 days will act as a boost for the next coming month. One of our guru told me that if you want to visit the temple you can visit and nothing wrong and no restrictions for those three day.
ITS ALL UP TO OUR FEELING AND UP TO US.

    Hi All,
I am curious on this issue since long. I found good answers here in this forum. Thank you all. I have come to know that an author named Aruna Deshpande has written a book on the period issue in Marathi by the name 'Eka Shapachi Gosht' but could not find it in market. If you ladies could find it, may go through and let us know.
I found this post and registered myself in IndusLadies.
Thanks and Regards all of you.

Hi every body read all ur mail, i too want too share my opinion,

    :idea
According to me , temple, and pooja room etc are the places where we should feel relaxed and have a purified mind ,once we entered .

We use to feel relaxed only when we are free from all natural calls ,think can ve have full bhakthi, if one is called for the restroom:rant, we cant, likewise the menses period is also a natures call which is throughout 3 days at that time even we have huge bakthi one cant feel relaxed this may be due to pain or tiredness or feeling of bit uneasyness but all womens should accept that normal days are different from that three days regarding the body condition.

we should feel that places belongs to god are very pure so that we are not allowed to go inside when we having full body tiredness.

the menses period doesnt say that we are unhygeine, but it says we can concentrate.

Mixed opinions on the question.Even though i don't fully agree with all the rules said by our elders to be followed during periods, i still don't visit temple or do pooja during those days.

I heard one more story related to this. If a women touches the plants during her periods, the plants will not grow and die.Especially this is said for Tulsi Plant. Is this really true?

    Interesting thoughts!
My mother is 78 now. She was born and brought up in a small village near Madurai. In her teens, there were no taps or water connections. People had to go to the river for all their water needs, even water for cooking and drinking were brought from the river.
She said that women were to stay in a room at the back of the house those 3 days, no baths were allowed. They have to change to the dress kept for this purpose in that room for those 3 days- no change of cloth was allowed. All things were kept separate for them, even rice and other pulses and appalam etc. were made separate for this purpose. No pickle was given during those days. The women had a bath at home on the 4th day and entered the house, but still stayed away from others. They had to take an oil bath on the 5th day at the river and then only they were allowed to do any work at home.
This ensured that the menstrual flow stopped completely before they started their usual work.
The ban on bath can be justified-they should not contaminate the river during that time. Due to heavy physical work normally, women welcomed this break.
But there were some people, they even went to the temple on the 4th day after taking a second bath - an oil bath. Rules are to be broken, may be it was their motto.
Temples were very large ones those days and so to avoid the women getting tired, they may have been advised to stay home.
If God is omnipotent, he is everywhere, right? Then how can one say that He is only in temples and in puja rooms? He has only given this also, so why should we feel guilty?
According to Hindu idealogy, atma does not have gender. It does not have birth or death or theettu. This is what should be our idea.
We have thrown the juice out and are taking only the waste, in many cases.

So true ! Also there is a practice in few homes that a kid is made not to wear any clothes those days that if we touch the clothes, it becomes impure! How can that be!! These things always are bouncers to me! One feels so bad looking at your own kid without clothes.. !

True, rest is required during those days. But again, how can anything get impure when we "touch" clothes or vessels!

Just one question, so shouldnt the sick too be banned from entering pooja room and temples till they are healthy and well? Because we will be tired when we have any kind of sickness, even a natural cold will make us too tired and sleepy. But dont we take bath and lit the lamps still?
